I was definitely trying to surprise some people with this one. Nothing like a good plot twist!

That would certainly explain why she's been abusing him. She was desperately looking for some way to regain control in her life, and this miniature man just kind of falls into her lap, helpless and at her mercy. She controls him by taking out her frustration and anger on him, and in a way she's giving control of her own life back to herself. Only now does she start to realize what she's been doing, and what she nearly lost by doing it.
