What struck me in these chapters with Maggie is that he doesn't ask for water.

If he's not thirsty, I don't want to know it.

If he's afraid of asking - idem.

Interesting thought.  He probably is thirsty, but figures he's better off not trying to ask for anything, so Maggie doesn't get more ammo to tease him with.
