In my head, a lot of the people have been displaced and are living in the space between cities.  I had/have an idea for a scene where they come across a massive refugee camp.  The other survivors have all fled to the capital, which is about as deep into human country as you can get, and the most heavily protected city.  But yeah, nobody is really just traveling in the open anymore.
