Chapter 28

A drop of sweat rolled down Icarus’ brow as the stress of his task started to affect him. With two thin wooden rectangles in both hands, Icarus was slowly bringing them closer together. Boredom had started to set in after Terra had decided to take a little break from their journey to do a little bit of experimenting. So here he was laying on the ground underneath the only tree in a few hundred meters in any direction. A plain resided to his south while a massive mountain range covered his north. It was only on his suggestion that he convinced Terra to take them far away from the main road for her to check out her new boots. After activating Icarus’ magic, Terra went off to have some fun. Having his magic at his disposal had led in to making a deck of thin wooden cards from a log nearby. Icarus was about to add the fifth and final layer to his house when he heard an all too familiar scream.

A second later a large figure came plummeting out of the sky landing around close to two hundred meters away from him. The force of her impact had left a small crater at her feet while also causing the surrounding area to vibrate. Icarus felt a little disheartened as he once mighty house collapsed from small quake. It was soon pushed aside by a happier feeling as he looked up to the cause of the quake. Icarus gave an involuntary jerk as Terra ran towards him covering the distance between them in a little over a second.

Standing up Icarus raised his eyes upwards looking past a set of knees above his head. Going past this his eyes followed up Terra’s body past her waist towards her shoulders and finally to her head. Icarus was willing to bet that if he could see Terra’s face then it would no doubt be smiling back at him. Crouching down Terra raised Visleam just high enough so that Icarus was able to make eye contact.

“Icarus, you’ve got to see this.” squealed Terra as she brought the helmet back over her face.

Terra was off again in a blur as Icarus tried to keep his eye on her. Icarus followed her as Terra leapt at least a hundred feet into the air and landed on a large bolder that use to be at least twice Terra’s height. Icarus covered his ears as a loud cracking sound ripped throughout the mountain range. Terra was now standing in the middle of rubble as debris was still raining down around her. Walking over to another boulder that was just a little taller than herself, Terra placed one hand upon it before taking a step back. Icarus flinched again as Terra kicked the boulder sending it flying a couple hundred meters away.

Luckily Terra had chosen an area that was devoid of life, except for a few trees here and there, to test out her new boots. Looking around Terra could see that the landscape around her was torn to pieces. Looking over past Icarus Terra could see that the main roadway was empty for several miles in either direction. Looking over at Icarus she found him bent over picking up the cards that he had been playing with. Running over to her friend Terra took off Visleam and placed it against her pack. Well not really her pack, it was just a light piece of leather that held some food and her actual pack inside of it. Terra had enjoyed her new size for the past week now, but Icarus guessed that it would come to an end soon. It was upon knowing this that Terra made a crude pack that she could just discard once she shrunk back down to normal size.

“I think that it’s around lunch time.” said Terra as she fished around inside till she found some bread and dried fruit. Very carefully Terra lifted her actual pack up and deposited it in front of Icarus. As if on cue Icarus stood up and started searching through it for something to eat.

“So, how far do you think we are from the dwarves?”

[Maybe a week out] replied Icarus as he stuffed his face full of bread.

“Come on, I could get us there in under a day.” replied Terra as she kicked her feet up and down.

[You could but I don’t think my body could handle going that fast] thought Icarus. [The boots only work for the person wearing them.] Terra only replied with a huff as she continued to eat her lunch. It wasn’t till some time later that Icarus picked up the conversation again.

[Do you need any help with your arm?] asked Icarus as he stared at Terra’s bruised forearm.

“Nah it’ll be okay by itself. Maybe I’ll let you at it once I’m small again. I’ll just keep it as a reminder to always use the helmet when I’m playing with the boots.”

This caused both Terra and Icarus, though silently, to fall into a fit of laughter. After packing up the rest of her leftovers, Terra closed off the flow of magic as she lifted Icarus up onto her shoulder. Walking back towards the road Terra spent a little bit of time tying a few strands of hair around Icarus’ waist to make sure that he didn’t fall.

Morning led to noon as noon led to evening as Terra and Icarus continued to travel westward. Winter was upon the horizon as Terra had to stop to retrieve some heavier clothing for Icarus as the temperature dropped as night approached. Cold weather didn’t affect Terra, but Icarus was a different matter. It was around nighttime when Terra had finally decided to stop for the night. Pulling Visleam over her head again, Terra felt into the back of her mind for the all too common sphere. After releasing the top covering, Terra witnessed the darkness in the surrounding area vanished leaving everything as clear as day.

With her increased size it took no time at all to set up a small camp for Icarus. Of course Icarus had to help out with the more delicate matters, but soon they had set up a tent with a small, to her, fire blazing. One of the biggest disadvantages to Terra’s new size was that she couldn’t enjoy a warm meal for fear of burning down an entire forest. Icarus had refused to cook anything for himself so that he too would eat his food cold, but it was hard to argue with someone who is ten times your size. The fun of the day had started to take effect as both Terra and Icarus found themselves feeling sleepy.

Since Terra was too big to sleep with Icarus to keep him warm she made sure that Icarus had more than enough blankets inside the tent. It was comical to see Icarus snuggling up inside a sea of blankets as he nodded off to sleep. Slowly curling herself up around the tent, Terra found herself drifting off to sleep. But tonight would become different for her as the thought of turning off Icarus’ magic had somehow slipped her mind. Terra was soon going to have a dream that wasn’t entirely her own.
