Story Notes:

I'm an Italian artist and writer and for some years I'm writing a long story, called "Mondo Ridotto" (Literally: Reduced World).

Several times someone advised me to translate it into English, to make it known to the world beyond my country and I have always refused because I do not feel so confident about the English.
Communicating is fine, but telling is a whole different matter. One needs a very good mastery of the language to be able to tell effectively.
In addition, translating more than 640,000 words is a challenge that discourages me a bit.

But lately - also to defeat the notorious writer's block - I'm committing to write a short side story. It is set in the same narrative universe as Mondo Ridotto. So I decided to translate this one, hoping it would be interesting for all of you.

This is the lore you might need to know.

Mondo Ridotto (Literally "Reduced World") is set 1000 years into the future.

In these 1000 years the world society has passed a new Middle Ages derived from socio-economic chaos. The males can not communicate with the women because their voices play at too high frequencies and after the new Middle Ages the society has reduced the Homo Sapiens Minor in a role of  pet/food/object, forgetting and losing every memory of the time when he had the same female size. He is considered a by-product of human reproduction and the the lack of communication and tradition does not allow anyone to consider men as beings endowed with self-consciousness.

That sounds like a pretty standard plot, I admit. But this is just a pretext to narrate a more complex world.

In this future, female humanity (after a long dark period) has expanded throughout the solar system. The Earth is the economic and political center of the solar system, but there are settlements everywhere. On Mars, for example, on the moon but also on the moons of gas giants, in the belt of asteroids as well. There are many space stations (mostly in the form of O'Neill Cylinder and Stanford Torus): orbiting around the Earth, Venus or Mercury.
Island One is the most important of all. It is not only the political and administrative capital of the solar system, but also the home of the richest and most powerful women of all humanity.
The technology is very advanced: The manipulation of gravity has allowed very fast space travel (at the minimum distance of the two planets, the journey from Earth to Mars takes 6 days) and medical science, genetics, robotics has allowed women to enjoy long life, perfect health and optimal bodies. The richest women in humanity can even live virtually forever and keep an eternally youthful aspect.

In contrast to female society, there is the male part of humanity. The genetic modification of the male body has brought about numerous changes. In the female womb, 60 to 100 male children are born for every female daughter. These are usually sold to pet shops, which pay well for this "material", or to small associations that raise them and then release them into the wild. Or, they are simply thrown away with the placenta and collected by wild men.

For one reason or another, there are a great many - though less than those kept in captivity - males who live in nature (or in the cavities of female buildings or even in sewers) and these have ended up by creating their own civilizations. But they never evolved technologically like women's ones. They live as opportunists, cultivating, hunting and manufacturing, of course, but also taking advantage of food and objects from the female world. A bit like in the series The borrowers.

Males, both wild and domestic, have an average height of 7 cm (or 2.7 inches). Their eyes are entirely black, entirely covered by the pupil.  They have a fast metabolism, they are stronger than they would be at female size (they can lift on average 10 times their weight... This means that they can lift weights of about 10 grams.) and their life, under optimal conditions, can reach up to 230 years. But almost all of them die much, much earlier because of the women, accidents, hunger or prey of bigger animals.

Their most important characteristic, however, concerns their nervous and vocal systems. Being smaller, they have very fast reflexes, very fast mental processes and the frequency of their voice is too high for women to hear. This, along with the cultural tradition, convinces women that man - or Homo Sapiens Minor - is an animal without intellect or self-awareness.
So there is little empathy for them on average. This allows women to use them as food, toys or pets.
And this despite the fact that it is clear that they know how to build objects and solve problems. The common culture, just as it has happened in the past, even influences science and the few women who have documented male intellectual abilities have been ostracized and mocked.

This is what I can summarize to you here, without having to write a whole treatise on the lore of my story.
This short story is set on Island One
