Chapter 4: Getting along
Brianna sat at the far end of the container, her mind racing as she tried to come up with something, *anything*, to avoid more of Claire’s games. Claire had given her an ultimatum: come up with an idea for what they could do, or Claire would decide—and Brianna had a sinking feeling she wouldn’t like whatever Claire came up with. Sitting in silence, letting Claire's gaze pierce through her, wasn’t an option. Finally, after a long pause, Brianna swallowed her pride and muttered, “How about a game?”
Claire raised an eyebrow, her fingers still idly tracing the edge of the container. “A game?” she repeated, intrigued but skeptical. “What kind of game are we talking about here?”
Brianna took a breath, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. “Something simple. Like… a scavenger hunt.”
Claire’s eyebrow arched higher, and a smile started to form on her lips. “A scavenger hunt? With you this small?”
Brianna sighed, feeling Claire’s skepticism weighing on her. “You could hide things around the room, and I could find them. It’s something we can both do, right? You get to watch me try, and I get to move around for once.”
Claire leaned back, considering the idea for a moment. “Hmm… that’s not terrible,” she admitted, clearly thinking about it. “But it’s missing something. You know what I mean?” She stood up from the bed, pacing thoughtfully. “It’s a little too easy if you just wander around. I mean, I’ve got to give you a challenge, or it’s no fun at all.”
Brianna bristled, but she kept her cool. “A challenge?” she asked cautiously.
Claire grinned, walking over to her desk. “Yeah! Like, say… you have a time limit to find things, and if you don’t…” Her eyes twinkled with mischief. “You have to do something for me. Nothing too crazy, just… I get to give you a task, you know, keep it interesting.”
Brianna rolled her eyes, knowing Claire wouldn’t let the game be straightforward. But the idea of moving around, stretching her legs, and doing *something* other than sitting in a plastic container seemed worth it. “Fine,” she muttered. “But nothing ridiculous.”
Claire clapped her hands together, clearly excited. “Deal! Alright, let’s get you out of that box first.”
Without warning, Claire reached down and carefully plucked Brianna from the container, her fingers wrapping gently but securely around her tiny body. Brianna winced at the sensation of being lifted so effortlessly, but she said nothing, letting Claire set her down on the soft surface of the bed. Claire then crouched down, face level with her, still wearing that mischievous grin.
“Alright, Bri,” Claire said, tapping her chin thoughtfully. “I’ll hide three things around the room. You’ll have five minutes to find them all. If you find everything, I’ll leave you alone for a while. But if you don’t…” Her grin widened. “You’ll have to give me that foot massage I was talking about earlier.”
Brianna’s eyes narrowed. “Seriously?”
“Hey, you agreed to a challenge,” Claire said with a wink. “But don’t worry—I’ll make sure they’re not *too* hard to find. Sound fair?”
Brianna groaned internally but nodded. At least it was something to do, and maybe—just maybe—she could avoid Claire’s “reward” if she played her cards right. “Fine. But don’t make it impossible.”
Claire chuckled. “Relax. I’ll keep it fair.”
She walked over to her desk, grabbing a few small items—a button, a hair clip, and a crumpled piece of paper. It didn’t take long for her to hide them in various spots. She quickly placed the button under the dresser, tossed the crumpled paper into the folds of a blanket on the bed, and laid the hair clip on top of a stack of books on the nightstand.
In just under a minute, Claire stood back, hands on her hips, looking rather pleased with herself. “Alright, all set! Your time starts… now!”
Brianna immediately darted forward, scanning the room as she moved as quickly as her tiny legs would allow. Claire leaned against the bedpost, watching Brianna with keen interest, the grin never leaving her face.
Brianna spotted the first item—the crumpled piece of paper—tucked between the folds of a blanket on the bed. She rushed over, clambering up the soft surface and grabbing it. “Got one!” she called, dropping the paper at her side. Claire gave a slow, approving nod but didn’t say anything, clearly enjoying the spectacle of watching Brianna scramble around.
Next, Brianna’s eyes caught sight of the button under the dresser. She sprinted over, sliding under the edge of the dresser with ease. Her heart raced as she grabbed the button and quickly pulled it back out, her tiny hands moving as fast as she could manage.
“Two down,” she muttered to herself, her breathing getting heavier.
As the seconds ticked by, Brianna frantically scanned the room for the last item. The hair clip. Where had Claire hidden it?
She ran toward the nightstand, her heart pounding as the time continued to slip away. And then she saw it—resting on top of the stack of books on the nightstand. Her stomach sank. It was too high for her to reach easily. She’d have to climb.
Brianna leapt onto the edge of the bed again, scrambling up and reaching for the books. Her hands trembled slightly as she began to climb the fabric, one tiny step at a time. Claire’s watchful gaze followed her every move, clearly enjoying the struggle as Brianna pushed herself to reach the top.
“Time’s running out, Bri!” Claire called, her voice laced with amusement.
Brianna bit her lip, her heart hammering in her chest. She was so close. She just needed to—
The timer beeped, and Claire clapped her hands together, her grin widening. “Aaand time’s up!”
Brianna froze, still clinging to the side of the bed, her fingers just inches away from the hair clip. She let out a frustrated groan, dropping back down to the bed in defeat.
Claire sauntered over, crouching down to Brianna’s level once again, her eyes sparkling with playful satisfaction. “Well, you almost had it,” she teased, reaching down to pluck the hair clip from the books. “But not quite.”
Brianna glared up at her, catching her breath. “You put it up there on purpose.”
Claire laughed softly, clearly entertained. “Maybe. But a deal’s a deal, right? Looks like you owe me that foot massage, Bri.”
Brianna’s stomach twisted as Claire stretched out on the bed, wiggling her toes with an exaggerated sigh. “You know, my feet are *really* tired after all that hiding stuff. I could definitely use a little help,” Claire teased.
Brianna clenched her teeth. “You’re serious?”
Brianna stood there, glaring. She knew she had no choice. Claire had won the game, and there was no getting out of it. Slowly, she approached Claire’s feet, feeling the heat rise to her face.
Claire nodded, wiggling her toes as she stretched out on the bed. She playfully poked Brianna with her toes, gently nudging her, an annoying smirk on her face. “Yep! You know the deal. Just a little massage—my feet could really use it after today.”
Brianna took a step back, feeling both the nudge and the rising frustration as Claire’s toes prodded her. She glared up at Claire, her fists clenched. “I hate you,” she muttered through gritted teeth.
Claire grinned, shifting slightly to get comfortable. “Hey, at least it’s something to do,” she said, a teasing lilt still in her voice. “I’m sure you’ll be great at it.”
Brianna rolled her eyes, but there was no escaping the task now. Resigned, she started the humiliating job of rubbing Claire’s feet, knowing full well that this wouldn’t be the last of Claire’s little games.
Brianna hesitated at the edge of the bed, staring at Claire’s outstretched feet. Her stomach churned with embarrassment. She couldn’t believe it had come to this—massaging Claire’s feet because of some stupid scavenger hunt. But a deal was a deal, and she had no way to back out now.
Claire watched her with that same playful smile, wiggling her toes as if to remind Brianna what she was waiting for. “Come on, Bri,” Claire teased. “It’s not that bad. My feet are *really* sore after all that walking today. You’ll really help me out here.”
Brianna clenched her jaw, trying to keep her frustration in check. She was sure Claire didn’t need any real help—her feet were well cared for despite her constant teasing about them being tired. Even after a whole day of walking, they didn’t seem rough or dirty. But knowing this didn’t make Brianna feel any better about her situation. With a deep breath, she forced herself forward, kneeling beside Claire’s feet.
She reached out hesitantly and placed her tiny hands on Claire’s left foot, the warmth of Claire’s skin immediately making her recoil for a moment before she steadied herself. Claire watched, clearly amused by Brianna’s reluctance. “See? That wasn’t so hard, was it?”
Brianna glared up at her, but said nothing, biting back a sharp retort. Instead, she began to knead her hands into Claire’s foot, using her palms and fingers to apply pressure. Her hands were so small that it felt almost pointless, but Claire seemed content to let her try.
As Brianna worked, Claire let out a dramatic, exaggerated sigh, leaning back into the pillows. “Ahhh, that’s the spot,” she said in a singsong voice, her eyes half-closed in exaggerated bliss. “You know, Bri, you’re surprisingly good at this. Maybe we’ve found your true calling.”
Brianna narrowed her eyes, frustrated by Claire’s mock praise, but continued massaging her foot anyway, determined to just get it over with.
Honestly, that wasn’t exactly true, and Claire knew it. Brianna’s hands, at her tiny size, barely had enough strength to make a dent in her sore muscles. If Claire wasn’t so ticklish, she probably wouldn’t have felt much at all. Still, Claire wasn’t cruel enough to point that out. She could tell Brianna was trying, and that was enough for now.
Brianna shot Claire a sharp look but kept her mouth shut, muttering under her breath, “I’m not your little toy, Claire.”
Claire heard her but only grinned, clearly amused. “You’re not?” she asked, a fake surprise in her voice, giving Brianna a playful nudge with her toes. Brianna’s glare deepened, but Claire continued, still full of pretense. “Is there anything else you can do I’m not aware of?” She leaned back, watching for a reaction, clearly enjoying pushing Brianna's buttons.
Brianna tugged against the playful nudge, trying to maintain some shred of dignity, but it was a losing battle. The humiliation of it all was sinking in deeper by the minute, and Claire’s constant prodding wasn’t helping. She could feel her patience wearing thin.
Brianna’s face burned with humiliation, her fists tightening as she pressed into Claire’s sole. She tried to block out Claire’s voice, focusing instead on just getting through the task. But every time she tried to focus, Claire’s toes would playfully poke at her.
At first, Claire just nudged Brianna gently with her big toe, as if testing her reaction. Brianna tried to ignore it, but Claire, clearly upset by the lack of response, pushed her toes against Brianna’s arm, almost like she was prodding a toy.
“I didn’t think you would be so diligent” Claire teased, her toes now lightly tapping Brianna’s shoulder. “You’re all serious and grumpy, but you’re really not bad at this. My feet feel amazing.”
Brianna huffed, pressing her palms harder into Claire’s foot. The skin was soft, surprisingly smooth, and despite Claire’s constant teasing, her feet weren’t unpleasant to touch. That didn’t make the situation any less humiliating, though.
Just when Brianna thought Claire might stop, Claire’s toes nudged at her again, this time gently pushing against her head, messing with her hair. “You’re such a tough little thing,” Claire mused, her voice light but with an undercurrent of teasing. “But you’re kind of cute when you’re like this. Doing what you’re told despite all those protests.”
Brianna’s patience finally snapped. She jerked back, glaring up at Claire. “Would you stop poking me already? You got what you wanted! Just let me finish this and leave me alone.”
Claire paused for a moment, clearly taken aback by Brianna’s sudden outburst. But then, instead of backing off, her smile softened into something less teasing, though still playful. “Alright, alright,” she said, pulling her toes away and giving Brianna a bit of space. “I’ll try not to mess with you. But it’s just… just so much fun seeing you all worked up.”
Claire gave Brianna a few moments of peace, but as she stopped doing her job, she nudged her back with her toes again, this time gentler. “Come on, don’t be so grumpy. You’re doing fine.” She wiggled her toes playfully, watching Brianna’s face twist in annoyance.
Brianna was about to snap something back when Claire interrupted. “You know, we could get along, right? Despite what you think, your condition isn’t so bad.”
Brianna snorted, barely containing her frustration. “You think getting along means me doing everything you say?”
Without missing a beat, Claire immediately responded with a casual, “Yes.”
For a split second, silence hung between them, the only sound being Claire’s soft chuckle as Brianna blinked up at her in disbelief. Then Claire finally broke the tension with a laugh. “I’m kidding. Well... mostly.” She winked, but her teasing tone made Brianna unsure if she was really joking.
The tension lingered as Brianna kept working, her small hands pushing into Claire’s smooth foot. She was trying to ignore the comment, but Claire's teasing grin still loomed in the back of her mind.
Claire, sensing Brianna’s discomfort, stretched her arms behind her head, looking more relaxed than ever. “Alright, alright, don’t get all tense on me,” she said with a laugh. “I’m only half-serious. You might not like it, but we are stuck together for a while. We might as well figure out how to make this... less awful.”
Brianna paused, her hands still resting on Claire’s foot as she considered the situation. She hated being this small, hated being at Claire’s mercy, but Claire wasn’t wrong. As much as she resented everything about this arrangement, getting along—or at least tolerating each other—might make this bizarre punishment a little more bearable.
“Fine,” Brianna muttered after a long pause, “but don’t expect me to enjoy it.”
Claire chuckled softly, still wiggling her toes lazily as Brianna continued the humiliating task. “We’ll see,” she said, her voice softer now, as if offering a tiny truce. “You’re doing great, by the way.”
Brianna rolled her eyes but kept going, determined to get through this ridiculous task. She hated how smug Claire was, but a part of her—though she’d never admit it—was starting to realize that maybe, just maybe, Claire wasn’t trying to make this as miserable as it could have been. And for now, that was the only victory she could hold onto.
Brianna continued her task in silence for the rest of the time, trying to ignore Claire’s teasing grin and the gentle nudges from her toes. Every so often, Claire would shift or stretch, her toes flexing lazily, as if to remind Brianna who was in control. Despite the humiliation, Brianna stayed focused, pushing her small hands into the smooth skin of Claire’s foot, willing the minutes to pass faster.
After what felt like an eternity, Claire shifted her foot slightly, and Brianna instinctively tensed, expecting more teasing. But instead, Claire lifted her foot away, pulling both of her legs back to herself.
“Well,” Claire said, her voice much softer now, “I think that’s enough for tonight.” She wiggled her toes one last time before settling back against the pillows, looking satisfied. “You did a good job, Bri. I’ll give you that.”
Brianna let out a quiet sigh of relief, finally free of the task. She wiped her hands on her pants, though they weren’t particularly dirty—just clammy from the warmth of Claire’s skin. She stayed silent, refusing to acknowledge Claire’s praise, though the faint blush on her cheeks betrayed her lingering embarrassment.
Claire, noticing Brianna’s reaction, smiled but didn’t push any further. She shifted on the bed, grabbing her blanket and tossing it over herself. “Alright, let’s get some sleep. It’s been a long day, and you’ve definitely earned a break.” She glanced over at Brianna, who was still sitting awkwardly on the bed. “I guess you’ll need a place to sleep too.”
Brianna blinked, caught off guard by the sudden change in tone. She hadn’t thought about where she would sleep, and the idea of spending another night in Claire’s bed made her stomach turn. “You’re not... putting me back in that box, are you?” she asked, her voice edged with frustration.
Claire shook her head, stretching her arms behind her head as she relaxed into the pillows. “Nah, the box is boring. Besides, I think we’ve... upgraded our arrangement, remember?”
Brianna frowned. “Upgraded?”
“Yeah, upgraded. You’re not just my little prisoner anymore. You’re my—" Claire paused, grinning playfully, “—roommate. And there’s only one bed in my room, which happens to fit both of us.”
Before Brianna could protest, Claire’s hand gently wrapped around her waist, lifting her with ease. Brianna squirmed instinctively, trying to wriggle free, but Claire’s grip was firm yet soft, enveloping her in warmth. “Relax,” Claire said, her voice soothing but playful. “I’m not going to squish you.”
Claire shifted back into her pillows, laying down fully as she brought Brianna closer, her fingers curling protectively around the tiny girl. “This’ll be much more comfortable than that box,” Claire murmured, her voice heavy with sleep. Without waiting for a response, she tucked Brianna against her chest, her hand resting securely over her.
Brianna froze at first, her heart racing as Claire’s hand cradled her snugly. The warmth of Claire’s skin and the gentle rise and fall of her breathing surrounded her, making it impossible to escape. But as the seconds passed, the soft rhythm of Claire’s chest and the steady pulse beneath her fingers began to lull Brianna into an uneasy calm.
“This is ridiculous,” Brianna muttered under her breath, though her voice lacked its usual bite. Despite the strangeness of the situation, the warmth from Claire’s hand was oddly comforting, and Brianna could feel her body starting to relax despite herself.
Claire let out a sleepy chuckle, her thumb brushing lightly over Brianna’s back. “Shh... just get some rest,” she whispered. “Good night, Bri. Sweet dreams.”
Brianna wanted to protest, to push Claire away, but her exhaustion was catching up with her. The long day, the humiliation, and the constant teasing had worn her down more than she wanted to admit. As much as she hated to admit it, Claire’s hand was a soft, warm cocoon, and fighting against it felt pointless.
As she lay there, surrounded by Claire’s gentle grip, Brianna’s mind raced with conflicting emotions. She hated this—being held like some pet, with no real say in what happened to her. But at the same time, there was a strange comfort in it. Claire hadn’t been cruel, at least not in a malicious way. And for all the teasing, she seemed to genuinely care about Brianna, in her own twisted way.
Brianna sighed softly, closing her eyes as the warmth and steady rhythm of Claire’s breathing lulled her further into relaxation. This wasn’t what she wanted—none of this was—but at least for tonight, she could let her guard down, if only a little.
As sleep began to overtake her, she felt Claire’s fingers curl slightly, pulling her closer. The soft pressure of Claire’s hand around her was oddly reassuring, even though Brianna would never admit it. For now, it was enough to just rest.
The night passed quietly, with the tension between them easing into something softer, something almost tolerable. In the quiet darkness, with Claire’s protective hand keeping her close, Brianna’s usual resentment faded, replaced by a cautious acceptance. Tomorrow would bring more challenges, more teasing, and more games, but for now, she could finally rest.
