Chapter 5: Getting some fresh air

Brianna stirred groggily, her body instinctively trying to stretch, only to be met with the soft but firm pressure of Claire’s hand wrapped around her. It took her a moment to remember where she was, the events of the previous night flooding back into her groggy mind. She was still small. Still trapped in this absurd reality. And worse yet—still cradled against Claire’s chest like some sort of stuffed animal.

She tried to shift, pushing lightly against Claire’s palm, but the warm hand tightened slightly around her, pulling her in closer. Claire’s steady breathing filled the space, each rise and fall of her chest making Brianna feel even smaller. The gentle warmth was comforting despite Brianna’s growing frustration.

"Great, just great," Brianna muttered under her breath. She squirmed again, but Claire’s hand only adjusted, curling possessively around her, as if instinctively protecting her in sleep, as well as preventing her from going away.

From her vantage point, Brianna could see Claire’s face, relaxed and peaceful in the early morning light. It was the first time Brianna had seen her without the usual teasing smirk or playful glint in her eyes, and it almost made her seem... normal. Less like the overbearing captor she’d been the day before. Almost.

Brianna felt a surge of annoyance. Sure, Claire was just enjoying this new power she had over her, but there was something unsettling about how easily she’d fallen asleep like this, hand wrapped around her as if this were the most natural thing in the world.

Brianna was about to make another attempt to wiggle free when Claire stirred. Her breathing hitched, and her eyes fluttered open slowly. For a moment, Claire blinked, disoriented, before she registered the warm shape in her hand. A sleepy grin spread across her face as she focused on Brianna.

“Morning, Bri,” Claire murmured, her voice thick with sleep. She yawned, her hand giving Brianna a gentle squeeze before releasing her slightly. “How’d you sleep?”

Brianna glared up at her, doing her best to ignore the ridiculousness of being asked how her sleep went while trapped in Claire’s hand. “I would’ve slept better if I wasn’t, you know, *held* like this all night.”

Claire smirked, stretching her arms and letting Brianna slip from her loose grip. “Oh, come on, it wasn’t that bad. You didn’t seem to mind once you dozed off,” she teased, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. “Besides, you looked kind of cozy.”

Brianna huffed, pulling herself up into a sitting position. “Cozy? Really?”

Claire’s grin widened. “Hey, I was comfortable, so I assumed you were too.”

Brianna crossed her arms, trying to suppress her irritation. “Well, next time, don’t assume.”

Claire laughed softly, stretching her arms over her head. “Fine, fine. I’ll ask next time. Maybe.” She tossed the blanket aside and swung her legs off the bed, glancing down at Brianna with that same mischievous glint she always seemed to have. “But you should tell me if you really prefer sleeping in the box over this.”

Brianna was silent…

Brianna huffed, standing up and brushing herself off. “Whatever. Just... don’t grab me like that again.”

But before Brianna could finish adjusting her clothes, Claire's hand swooped down again, plucking her up with the same ease as the night before. “Like this?” Claire asked, grinning as she held Brianna up at eye level, her fingers curled lightly around her waist. “Why not? It feels really good to grab you.”

Brianna’s eyes flared with indignation, squirming in Claire’s hold. “Let go! I said no grabbing!”

Claire’s smirk grew wider as she gently placed Brianna back down on the bed. “Alright, alright. No need to get so worked up.” She stretched again, clearly amused by Brianna’s protests. “But hey, I’ve got something important to do this morning. You’re coming with me.”

Brianna frowned, trying to shake off the residual embarrassment. “Where? I’d rather just stay here.”

“Oh, no chance,” Claire said, standing up and moving to her dresser. “I’ve got errands to run, and you’re tagging along. Think of it as getting some fresh air.”

“Fresh air isn’t going to fix my problems” Brianna muttered.

Claire shook her head, laughing softly. “Neither will staying in the box. I’ve been nice enough to let you sleep on the bed. You’re not getting out of this one. Think of it as... bonding time.”

Brianna scowled. “Bonding time? Seriously?”

Claire nodded, unfazed by Brianna’s irritation. “You’ll get to see the world from a new perspective! Plus, it’ll be fun.” She paused, giving Brianna a playful look. “At least for me.”

Brianna crossed her arms, glaring up at her. “I don’t think our definitions of ‘fun’ are the same.”

Claire shrugged, grabbing a small satchel from the dresser. “Eh, you’ll survive. And who knows? Maybe you’ll actually enjoy yourself.”

Brianna shot her a look of disbelief, but Claire seemed completely unfazed, already tossing the satchel on the bed and gently picking Brianna up with practiced ease. Despite her protests, Brianna found herself being placed into the soft interior of the satchel, which was surprisingly cushioned and far less cramped than she had imagined.

“See? Not so bad,” Claire said as she slung the bag over her shoulder. “You’ll be safe in here, and you get to come with me. It’s better than being stuck in that container all day, right?”

Brianna scowled. “This is humiliating.”

Claire leaned down, her face close to Brianna’s, her teasing grin still in place. “Humiliating? Oh, come on, Bri. It’s not that bad. You should really start getting used to it,” she said, her tone light but with an edge of finality. “You’re going to be like this for a while. Might as well make the best of it.”

Brianna crossed her arms, settling into the makeshift seat inside the bag. “Fine. But I’m not going to LIKE this.”

“Sure, sure,” Claire said with a grin, as she slung the bag over her shoulder and headed for the door. “But who knows? Maybe you’ll enjoy the trip.”

Brianna grunted, rolling her eyes, though Claire couldn’t see it. “Doubt it,” she muttered.

Still, as they walked out into the morning light, Brianna couldn’t help but feel a strange mix of frustration and curiosity. The world outside the room was vast, and from her new, small perspective, it felt intimidating. But there was something about it—about seeing things from this angle—that stirred an odd feeling of anticipation in her.

Whatever was coming next, she’d face it. Begrudgingly, but she would.

And Claire, of course, seemed more than ready to enjoy every moment of it.

The soft sway of the satchel as Claire walked was surprisingly calming at first. Brianna leaned back against the cushioned interior, arms crossed, doing her best to ignore the situation. Outside, the city bustled around them—buildings rising high, people talking and passing by. To Brianna, though, it all seemed so distant and untouchable, her world reduced to the confines of Claire’s bag.

She was just starting to zone out when, without warning, Claire’s hand slipped into the satchel.

Brianna tensed, her body freezing as Claire’s fingers grazed over her. The touch was gentle but invasive, as if Claire was making sure she was still there. A lazy poke here, a soft brush there. Brianna scowled, instinctively shrinking back into the corner of the bag, but there was no escape from Claire’s hand.

“What are you doing?” Brianna hissed, glaring upward, though she knew her voice was probably lost in the noisy street.

Claire’s voice came down with a lighthearted tone, though her fingers still prodded at Brianna’s side. “Just making sure you’re comfortable in there,” she teased. “Can’t let you get too cozy and forget I’m here.”

Brianna swatted at Claire’s fingers, though the effort was almost laughable. Her small hands pushed back against the giant fingers, but all she could manage was to nudge them slightly. Claire chuckled, amused by the futile resistance.

“Wow, Bri,” Claire said with a mock gasp. “Look at you! You’re stronger than I thought.” She shifted her fingers slightly, then feigned weakness, pretending to struggle against Brianna’s push. “Oh no, you’re too powerful! You might actually beat me.”

For a moment, Brianna’s frustration faltered. She knew Claire was exaggerating, but it gave her a tiny surge of confidence, as though she could actually make a difference in this lopsided battle. She pushed back harder, managing to press Claire’s hand just a bit farther.

“There we go!” Claire encouraged, her voice filled with mock surrender. “See? You’re so strong, practically a superhero!” She let out an exaggerated sigh. “Alright, alright, I give up. You win.”

Brianna blinked, caught off guard by the sudden praise. She was ready for more teasing or poking, but instead, Claire let her have that tiny victory—for a moment. But just as Brianna thought Claire would stop, the fingers darted back in, poking her side and squeezing her middle.

“Just kidding,” Claire teased, her fingers giving Brianna’s side a playful tickle. “To be a worthy opponent for you, I shouldn’t give up that easily”

Brianna flinched, a surprised squeal escaping her before she could stop it. “Cut it out!” she growled, wriggling in Claire’s grip. “It’s annoying!”

Claire ignored the outburst, her fingers continuing to lightly poke at Brianna’s sides, teasing her just enough to provoke more resistance. “Annoying? Maybe,” she said with a grin. “I aren’t you having a good time fighting back. It’s so cute!”

Brianna gritted her teeth, trying not to react to the constant poking. She swatted at Claire’s fingers again, managing to push them away momentarily, but Claire’s hand remained in the satchel, lingering around just enough to remind Brianna of her giant owner.

Claire’s fingers moved up to give Brianna’s head a gentle pat. “See? It’s pretty fun, right?” she teased, her hand hovering over Brianna as if waiting for her next move. “Don’t be so tense.”

Brianna shot her a glare, but it was hard to stay completely angry when Claire was treating her more like a playmate than a prisoner. “I’m not tense,” she muttered, folding her arms defensively.

Claire chuckled softly, her fingers brushing over Brianna’s shoulder. “If you say so. Just trying to keep things fun. Wouldn’t want you to get bored in there.” Her hand lingered in the satchel, the warmth of her fingers a constant reminder of her presence. She didn’t withdraw fully, as if keeping Brianna within reach was part of the game.

The satchel jostled as Claire continued walking, and the gentle rocking nearly lulled Brianna into a more relaxed state, though the occasional poke or nudge from Claire’s hand kept her on edge. Brianna tried to shift away from the probing fingers, but Claire’s hand would follow her every move, giving her nowhere to hide.

Just as Brianna was starting to get used to the teasing, the hand, her tormentor for the last half an hour, retreated entirely out of her place. The satchel bounced harder than usual, and she realized they had stopped moving. The hum of the street had been replaced by a different kind of noise—the low rumble of an engine, and the sound of people shuffling close together.

Brianna peeked out of the top of the satchel, her eyes widening as she realized they were on a bus. The space inside was packed, with passengers crammed tightly together, and Brianna’s heart sank as she felt Claire push through the crowd, searching for a place to stand.

The satchel bounced against Claire’s side as she was pushed and jostled by the crowd. Brianna clung to the edge of the bag, feeling the pressure of bodies moving around them. She hated how vulnerable she felt—tucked away and completely at the mercy of Claire’s movements. Every time Claire adjusted her stance, the bag shifted, knocking Brianna into the soft sides of the satchel.

As things calmed down a bit and there was a firm place to stand, Claire’s hand slipped back into the bag, her fingers curling protectively around Brianna’s waist.

“Hold on tight,” Claire murmured down to her, her voice barely audible over the noise of the crowded bus. “Wouldn’t want you flying around in there.”

Brianna grunted, annoyed but grateful for the stabilizing grip. “I can handle it,” she muttered, trying to maintain her dignity.

Claire’s fingers squeezed lightly around her, not letting go.  “Better safe than sorry.”

As the bus swayed with each turn, Claire’s hand remained steady, keeping Brianna securely in place. But that didn’t stop the occasional poke or tickle, as if Claire couldn’t resist messing with her even in the tight confines of the bus.

Brianna shoved Claire’s fingers away, but it was a futile gesture. Claire only chuckled, her fingers returning for another playful squeeze. “You’re cute when you’re mad, you know that?” she teased.

“Stop it,” Brianna growled, her frustration building. “I’m not here for your entertainment.”

Claire grinned, her hand still resting in the satchel. “You’re right. You’re here for our adventure.” She gave Brianna’s side a playful tickle before finally pulling her hand away as the bus began to slow down. “We’re almost there.”

As the bus came to a stop, Claire stepped off, her satchel swaying gently with the movement. The noise of the crowded bus faded into the background as they walked down a quieter street, lined with trees and low-rise apartment buildings. Brianna peered out of the satchel, taking in the new surroundings with a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

“Where are we going?” Brianna asked, trying to sound indifferent but feeling her unease grow.

“Where are we going?” Brianna asked, trying to sound indifferent but feeling her unease grow.

Brianna wasn’t so sure.

They climbed the stairs, the building’s hallway dimly lit and quiet. Claire knocked on one of the doors, and a moment later, it swung open to reveal a young woman with short, messy hair and glasses. She smiled at Claire.

“Claire! You made it!” the woman said, stepping aside to let her in.

“Of course, Mae,” Claire replied, stepping inside. “Ready to get started?”

Mae nodded, her eyes lighting up. “Oh, absolutely. Everything’s set up in the back.”

Brianna’s stomach twisted as Claire followed Mae into the apartment. What was she getting into now?

Claire didn’t waste time pulling Brianna from the satchel and setting her down on a nearby table. Brianna immediately crossed her arms, glaring up at the two giants looming above her. Mae stared at her with wide eyes, intrigued but not shocked.

“So... this is Bri?” Mae asked, bending down to get a closer look.

“Yep,” Claire said proudly. “My little guest.”

“Bri,” Claire said, introducing her with a playful smile. “This is Mae. She’s got a little experiment she wants to try.”

Brianna’s heart pounded. “Experiment? What kind of experiment?”

Mae adjusted her glasses, looking intrigued as she leaned in closer to examine Brianna. “Don’t worry, it’s nothing dangerous. I just need your help with something. You’ll be fine.”

Brianna’s unease grew as she glanced between Claire and Mae. Whatever they had planned, she had a feeling it wasn’t going to be pleasant.
