side story 1: A shift in prison
Officer Grace Winters slumped against the edge of a sunken, worn leather sofa, her body heavy from lack of rest. The fluorescent lights humming overhead cast a sterile glow over the large common room; its actual size exaggerated by the miniature inhabitants milling about in their shrunken forms. One twenty-fourth their natural size, the prisoners were less than three-inch tall, tiny figures scurrying across cold tile floors, insect-like, their voices shrill and barely audible.
Grace rubbed her temples, the long day now weighing on her. Her shift had begun at dawn, and now the artificial overhead lights mirrored the afternoon sun, now beginning to fade outside. Tension crept up her neck, in muscles dizzy from hours already spent with her body in one position. The communal room was quiet, except for the slightly louder hum of the ventilation system and the distant chattering of the small prisoners, each in his own tiny cluster. They had free rein to exit their cells and roam about the room as they pleased-small liberties, considering their circumstances-but none dared venture too close to where she sat. Not after what happened last month.
She leaned back, her weary eyes straying over the reduced world at her feet. The common room was set up like some sort of miniature diorama—a carefully crafted prison world for people the size of toys. Small plastic furniture stippled the room: dollhouse tables, benches, and even a little area of recreation where shrunk prisoners congregated to play games or converse in huddled whispers. They had their microsocial hierarchies, but Grace couldn't care less about understanding the dynamics. All she knew was that she was the real authority here and a towering figure of power amidst their diminutive existence.
One prisoner—a gangly, pale-skinned man named Corvin—stood in the far corner, his head down as he idly shuffled a stack of miniature playing cards. With Grace looming, the shrunken figure of him looked all the more insignificant.
He turned over his shoulder to her then, almost in defiance against her patience, before returning to the game. A jaded smirk tweaked the corner of Grace's lips upward. They always acted tough until they remembered she could squash them with a single step.
She sighed, running a hand through her short-cropped black hair. The novelty of the shrunken prisons had worn off long ago. When she'd first started, the idea of looming over convicts, of exerting a god-like power over their tiny lives, had been almost exciting. Now it was just tedious. The prisoners weren't threatening at this size, at least not for anything that counted.
A few of them would occasionally try her authority—one or two more daring souls may object, or try to start a fight in the common room—but it never took more than one lazy flick of her finger to put them right. She could squash any rebellion before it even began.
Her stomach growled. Lunch had been a stale sandwich she'd scarfed down hours ago and the vending machine in the corner was all out of the chocolate bars she liked. Grace considered calling for backup so she could take a break, but then shrugged the idea away. It wasn't worth the trouble. Not for this quiet shift. Not for this pitiful display of tiny humanity spread before her like an ant farm.
From her vantage point on the sofa, she could see everything. A group of prisoners sat at one of the tiny tables. Their voices were so small that she could barely hear them even with amplification feedback built into the room. They were playing cards—some mindless distraction to pass the time.
Grace once overheard them talking about the cards—how they are one of the few "luxuries" they have left. She didn't get that either. What's the point of playing if there isn't something at stake? They were all stuck here anyway.
One of the prisoners, a young woman with dirty blonde hair tied back in a greasy ponytail, kept darting glances up at Grace nervously, like she expected the giantess to stomp over and crush their little game underfoot. Grace met the prisoner's gaze, raised an eyebrow, and watched as the woman hastily dropped her eyes to pretend absorption in her cards. Yes, good, Grace thought. That was a good sign that they knew better than to test her patience. The monotony was broken by a faint buzz from her comms unit. Grace reached lazily for the device clipped to her belt, and as she did, her fingers brushed against the cold steel of her baton. "Winters, everything okay in the common room?" The voice of Officer Kade resized through the line.
"All quiet," Grace replied with a yawn, which somehow transcended to convey that she was bored beyond words. "Nothing really worth mentioning."
"Figures," Kade chuckled. "You sound like you are about to pass out over there."
Grace grunted in response, her gaze drifting back to the tiny figures shuffling around the room. "It's dead. These little shits are not going to be causing any trouble today."
"Enjoy it while you can," Kade said. "Never know when one of 'em might try somethin' stupid." Grace laughed—the sound boomed across the room. The prisoners looked up her way, their conversations terminating in mid-sentence as they exchanged nervous glances. "Yeah sure. Let me know when a three-inch convict becomes a real threat."
Silence fell along the line, and Grace leaned over to toss the comms device back onto the cushion beside her. The shift was dragging on, and with every passing minute, heavier her eyelids felt. She thought of closing them now, truly just for a moment, to rest her aching head.
She finally leaned back against the sofa, putting her booted feet up on the low table before her, feeling the faintest tap of something against her heel. It was barely perceptible, like the brush of a feather against her boot, but she knew exactly what it was. One of the tiny prisoners had wandered too close. She glanced down lazily, spotting a shrunken man standing near the edge of the table, his face pale and eyes wide. He had dropped something a tiny book, or what passed for one at his size and was now frozen, unsure whether to retrieve it or flee before Grace decided to react. For a time, Grace did nothing but stare at him, her expression unreadable. The man remained standing there, quivering, eyes darting between the towering figure of Grace and the dropped book. She felt like messing with him, maybe giving the book a light kick, just to see him scramble after it, but she was too tired. Instead, she let her boot nudge it gently towards him; the giant motion sending the little man tumbling backward. "Get lost," she muttered under her breath, her voice rumbling like distant thunder to his tiny ears. He snatched the book in a trice and then scurried away, without daring to look back. Grace closed her eyes again, sinking deeper into the cushions of the sofa, a soft smile curling on her lips. Yet another long, uneventful day inside the shrunk prison. Just the way she liked it.
As Officer Grace Winters’ shift came to an end, she stretched lazily, popping her stiff neck as she sat up from the sunken couch. The door to the common room slid open with a soft hiss, and in stepped the new recruit: a young, shy girl, barely out of academy training. Grace eyed her from across the room, taking in the girl’s awkward posture, her oversized uniform jacket hanging loosely over her small frame. Her large glasses slipped down her nose as she nervously adjusted them, blinking rapidly as she entered.
“Hey, Winters! Sorry I’m late,” the new girl mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper. She was clearly flustered, her pale cheeks tinged with pink as she tried to avoid eye contact.
Grace sighed and rose from the sofa, giving the girl a once-over, her gaze immediately drawn to the young officer’s choice of footwear. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.”
The new recruit shuffled nervously, clearly sensing Grace’s disapproval but not yet sure of the cause. Her outfit was complete, except for the footwear—a pair of low platform sandals, her pale feet exposed and her toenails painted black, still gleaming as if fresh from a pedicure.
Grace crossed her arms, a smirk forming on her lips. “What are those supposed to be?” she asked, nodding at the sandals. “You’re working in a prison, not lounging at the beach.”
The girl flushed a deep shade of red, looking down at her feet in embarrassment. “I, um, I didn’t know there was a dress code for shoes,” she stammered, fidgeting awkwardly. “I thought these would be okay…”
Grace scoffed, shaking her head. “Yeah, real professional. You’re just begging for trouble in here with shoes like that.” Before the new recruit could respond, a sudden blur of movement darted across the floor.
One of the shrunken prisoners, a wiry man with wild eyes and unkempt hair, launched himself onto the girl’s exposed foot. He landed with an almost feral intensity, his tiny hands grasping at her toes as he started licking them with frantic devotion. His tiny form clung to her sandal, his head bobbing up and down as his tongue worked across her black-painted nails.
The new recruit gasped in shock, stumbling backward but too stunned to fully react. “W-What is he doing?!” she squeaked, her face turning crimson as she froze, unsure of how to handle the situation.
Grace watched the scene unfold with an amused expression, crossing her arms over her chest as she leaned against the doorframe. “That psycho?” she said with a smirk, nodding toward the tiny prisoner still worshiping the girl’s foot. “His name’s Travis, but we just call him the ‘Toe Tickler.’”
The new recruit blinked, clearly confused and horrified. “The *Toe Tickler*?”
“Yeah,” Grace continued casually. “This creep kidnapped 20 women before he was finally caught. Tied them up, worshipped their feet, and sometimes even tickled them for hours. Never physically harmed any of them, but still, it was twisted. He was given 10 years originally, since none of the women were hurt… but after he showed zero progress in rehabilitation, they figured it was best to keep him locked up for life.”
The recruit glanced down in disbelief as Travis continued licking her toes, his tiny hands caressing her exposed skin as if in a trance. “I-I don’t know what to do…” she muttered, her voice barely audible as she shifted uncomfortably, still rooted to the spot.
Grace chuckled, clearly unfazed by the situation. “First lesson? You gotta be careful around guys like him. The second they see a little skin, they’re all over you. If you wear stuff like that—” she gestured to the recruit’s exposed feet—“you’re just feeding their fantasies. And believe me, this place is crawling with perverts.” Grace’s voice was matter-of-fact, but there was a slight edge of amusement behind her words.
The recruit’s face burned with embarrassment as she tried to shake the tiny man off her foot, but Travis held on with surprising tenacity. He seemed utterly engrossed in his strange worship, oblivious to the conversation happening around him.
“Seriously, just flick him off,” Grace said lazily, as if discussing something mundane. “He’s harmless at this size. All bark, no bite.”
With a hesitant look, the recruit finally mustered the courage to shake her foot hard enough to send Travis tumbling backward onto the tile floor. He scrambled to his feet, staring up at her with wide, pleading eyes before scurrying off to a corner of the room, his strange devotion seemingly satisfied for the moment.
The recruit exhaled in relief, clearly still shaken by the bizarre encounter. “I-I didn’t think something like that would happen…” she muttered, looking at Grace for reassurance.
Grace just shook her head, an amused smirk on her lips. “Welcome to the shrunken prison. Get used to it.” She pushed off from the doorframe, walking past the flustered recruit with a lazy wave. “Next time, wear proper shoes. You don’t want to give these freaks any more material to work with.”
The new recruit stood there in silence, still processing the surreal and unsettling moment. Her heart pounded, and she was acutely aware of the lingering sensation on her feet from Travis’ frantic worship. Shifting uncomfortably, she glanced down at her exposed toes, wondering if she had made the right choice in footwear after all.
“Oh, by the way,” Grace said with a smirk, “forgot to ask your name.”
“Uh, Emily,” the new recruit stammered, pushing her glasses up again. “Emily Owens.”
Grace nodded slowly. “Alright, Emily. Try not to let the little freaks get to you. And good luck with your shift” Grace turned around, wanting to leave.
Emily exhaled deeply, hoping that Travis was done with his bizarre foot-worshiping ritual. But as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other, she felt something brush against her toes once again.
Her eyes widened as she looked down, and there he was—Travis. The tiny man had crept back to her foot, this time clutching her sandal strap with a strange, desperate fervor. His tongue flicked across her skin, licking with an obsessive intensity, his eyes glazed over as if lost in his own world.
“H-Hey!” Emily squeaked, trying to shake him off once again. She nudged him with her foot, but Travis clung on, relentless. “Stop it! Please!”
But her efforts were useless. No matter how hard she tried to dislodge him, Travis kept coming back. He would stumble for a second when she shook him, only to crawl right back to her foot, determined and insistent. His tiny hands gripped her sandal strap, his face nuzzling against her toes as if he couldn’t bear to be separated from them for long.
In a panic, Emily looked around the room, unsure of what to do. The other shrunken prisoners were keeping their distance, quietly observing the scene unfold but unwilling to get involved.
Grace wasn’t interfering, as if she wanted Emily to get some experience. Arms crossed, leaning casually against the doorframe as she watched the scene. “He’s back already?” she said with a laugh, shaking her head. “Persistent little guy, isn’t he?”
“I-I can’t get him to stop!” Emily stammered, blushing furiously. “He won’t let go! I keep pushing him away, but he just comes back!”
Grace sighed, stepping forward, her booted feet thudding against the tile as she approached Emily. “Yeah, that’s Travis for you. He’s… well, let’s just say he’s got some pretty deep-rooted issues. I told you, didn’t I? The ‘Toe Tickler’ doesn’t give up.”
Emily stared at Grace, desperate for a solution. “But… can’t we lock him up? Keep him in his cell or something?”
Grace shook her head slowly, crouching down to eye Travis, who was still worshiping Emily’s foot with disturbing enthusiasm. “That’s the thing about this place, kid. Locking him up only makes it worse. Closing him in a cell messes with his psychology—makes him more unstable. He can’t handle isolation. And honestly, it goes against the principles of this common room. They’re supposed to have free reign in here. Within reason, of course.”
Emily blinked, incredulous. “But this isn’t… this can’t be reasonable, right? He’s literally licking my feet!”
Grace stood back up, her tone pragmatic. “Trust me, I get it. But look around.” She gestured to the room full of shrunken prisoners. “They’re already broken in a lot of ways, and this place is designed to let them interact without feeling completely powerless. If we start locking them up for every little thing, especially something like this, then why would there be a common room? It would just be making it worse for them mentally as well as breaking some prisoner laws. And with Travis… well, it’s harmless, really. Weird, yeah. But harmless.”
Emily’s face was flushed with embarrassment and disbelief. “Can’t we… do something else? Like… punish him?”
Grace gave her a wry smile. “You’d think that’d be easy, right? I mean, look at him—three inches tall. You could just squish him if you wanted to.” She paused, her expression growing serious. “But there’s a rule here: no abusing your size to torture prisoners. We can’t just beat them up physically whenever we like. It’s against policy. You can give some minor punishment, sure, but that is unlikely to deter him. The higher-ups want to avoid anything that could be considered abuse, especially given the size difference.”
Emily felt her frustration rising. “So what, I just let him… do this? Without any consequences?”
Grace shrugged. “Pretty much. All you can really do is lightly subdue him. Flick him off, push him away, but don’t hurt him too much. He’s not hurting you, after all. Just… indulging in his weird little fantasy.”
Emily groaned softly, feeling trapped by the absurdity of the situation. Travis, undeterred, continued licking her toes with a strange intensity, his tiny body quivering with each stroke of his tongue.
“But that’s not fair!” Emily protested. “He’s still a prisoner! There has to be something we can do!”
Grace sighed again, glancing down at Travis with a look of mild disdain. “Well, you could punish him, but it won’t stop him. He’s not scared of consequences because for him, the reward outweighs any punishment we can throw at him.”
Emily was at a loss, her foot still pinned under Travis’ obsessive ministrations. “But… what if he does this every time I’m here?”
Grace gave a sympathetic smile. “Then I’d suggest wearing proper shoes next time. You’re not gonna stop his behavior, but you can at least stop him from getting what he wants.”
With a final, amused chuckle, Grace patted Emily on the shoulder. “You’ll get used to it. Weird as it is, this is just part of the job. You’ll learn how to deal with it. Just… don’t feed his fantasies, alright?”
Grace turned and left once more, leaving Emily standing awkwardly, still unable to shake off the determined Travis. His tiny hands gripped her sandal, and he was practically vibrating with devotion as he continued licking, seemingly immune to any attempt to dislodge him.
Emily sighed, looking around the room again as she realized she was going to have to find a way to survive the rest of her shift with Travis attached to her foot. The other prisoners glanced her way occasionally, some with amusement, others with indifference. She felt exposed, like she was on display in some twisted show.
“Great first day,” Emily muttered under her breath, trying once again to flick Travis off her foot. He stumbled briefly, but as always, he crawled right back, more determined than ever.
