Her favourite fruit being apple hints that either she had something to do with his poisoning or/and definitely liked how it all turned out. Am I reading too much into it? There's no way you would have fruit responsible for ruining the life of your beloved brother as your favourite. Well, unless there's more to it.

I wanted to leave it open for interpretation but still implying exactly the two options you mentioned.
