#My fellow American readers: the kiwi is the national bird of New Zealand. Totally endemic to that island! But, since at least the 1960's, it has also become a generic slang term for expatriate human (as opposed to avian) New Zealanders.

Yes, and it was the character, rather than the author, who was using that slang to refer to them too.
