Welcome to Cover to Cover. I’m your host Jeanne Wilkinson. Today is June 12, 2023. Our topic tonight is the ten year anniversary of the Shrunk virus.

It seems everyone has a story about where they were in the summer of 2013 when the Special Human Retrovirus (Unique) began its incredible spread. From its origins traced to a farmers market in New York's Hudson Valley, SHRu-13 spread by touch and contaminated surfaces, and caused anyone who touched items, sat in a bus or plane seat, grasped a handrail or handled cash from an infected person to acquire the virus. Over the course of the infection, which could be anywhere from 10 days to a year or more, any person would slowly shrink to an unpredictable size. It happened in fits and starts, and many of us would wake up each morning smaller than the night before. Especially in those early days before we knew what Shrunk was capable of, it was a scary time. And the next few years changed our entire society beyond recognition.

[ Interview: Dr. James Krutsz, Epidemiologist, Chair of Special Department of SHRu-13 Studies, Harvard University. Age: 56, Height: 1.2 mm]

[Krutsz is a middle aged male doctor with short graying hair, he is sitting at a desk and chair, but is on a much larger surface that blurs into the distance. He is wearing a loose fitting tunic style garment in dark blue, almost like a slightly big T-shirt with a belt to hold items]

“No single event has changed human society and culture at all levels more than Shrunk. It’s indirectly killed an untold number of people, and affected the entire world’s population. Shrunk reorganized how we all live based on physical size. It forced accommodations to be made for people as small as ants to live productive, valuable lives. The changes it has brought to the world we once knew are incalculable, and yet its benefits to the earth’s climate and ecosystem are undeniable. I myself was Shrunk voluntarily five years ago to the smallest possible size of 1.2 mm as part of my research. I am a “nano”. It’s led to some significant adjustments, but I am able to continue my work.”

[Jeanne Wilkinson, with a map behind her showing a spread of red lines and expanding dots moving across the globe, from North America to Europe and Asia, Africa and South America]

The Shrunk virus spread rapidly, but its long incubation period made it difficult to track. Its resilience meant that even surfaces that had been cleaned remained infectious, and many cleaning crews found themselves shrinking even when using hazmat suits and PPE. The delay between exposure and symptoms made Shrunk far more dangerous, as unknowing carriers would hand cash to a store clerk or shake hands or breathe on someone and infect them without knowing it. This way they could spread the virus for weeks. The Shrunk virus had permeated all levels of society before its true effects were even seen.

[Dr. James Krutsz]

The first symptoms were headaches, and a certain clumsiness. Fingers missing the elevator buttons, grabbing the doorknob and missing, that kind of thing. Phone fingerprint sensors would fail to work as the shrinking of the victim would change their fingerprints very slightly. Shoes would not fit properly and need to be re-tied. The human brain has a very strong sense of bodily awareness and size perception, and we thought it was the so-called “Alice in Wonderland” syndrome at first. Initially when patients sought treatment for Shrunk, they were referred to neuropathy departments and scanned for brain tumors and other factors that may have caused perception issues. But the real cause was external, and as we all know now the patients really were shrinking. We should have had a lockdown but everyone thought it was psychological. We didn’t think it was a contagion. That delay cost us dearly. We didn’t even figure out it was a virus for two months.

[Interview: Dr. Tania Khatun, Frontline Medical Responder. Age: 35, Height: 28 inches]

[Dr. Khatun is a South Asian woman, her hair tied back with a head scarf, wearing scrubs and a large stethoscope. She is sitting in a doctor’s office on an oversized chair with a plastic step stool nearby. Her feet, in white Crocs, dangle off the front of the chair]

"Those first few weeks of Shrunk were a crazy time. Every day in our emergency room we would encounter people who said they were shrinking. They’d bring photographs, growth charts, clothes that were too big. If it happens once, it’s gotta be some nut. But it happens two, three times an hour, and then the people coming in are four and five feet tall, and we start wondering, what the heck’s going on here? Then half the hospital staff started shrinking too. It doesn’t feel like you’re shrinking, though. It feels like everything else around you is getting bigger. Your brain assumes you are the ‘default’ size. Even now I feel like I am still five foot nine and its just everything else that's huge."

[Jeanne Wilkinson]

By late summer, Shrunk’s impact was becoming undeniable. Several celebrities and public figures had begun to shrink, including Salma Hayek, Tom Hanks, Taylor Swift, Boris Johnson, the comedian Patton Oswalt, and Senator Ted Cruz. The shrinking was slow at first, and even people with the virus didn’t seem to mind too much, apart from the headaches. It was more funny than frightening, but as the shrinking continued and spread, calls for action became louder and louder.

[Dr. James Krutsz]

“In 2013 I was a research fellow at Harvard, studying epidemiology. When I saw Shrunk start to dominate the news I turned all our department’s attentions towards it. My team and I began to trace contacts with Shrunk patients and sequence the virus, which had properties utterly unlike anything we’d ever seen before. Our working theory is that the virus has a quantum effect on the mass of and space between particles, through a mechanism that we still don’t fully understand. As a retrovirus it affects the DNA of human cells and as our cells reproduce they do so at the smaller size even past the viral infection period. It only works on living tissue, and the virus only infects human DNA. Certain animals have been shrunk in lab conditions as we can duplicate the mechanism the virus uses, even if we don’t know precisely how it works. SHRu-13 is the most studied virus in human history. We know it down to the subatomic level, but many parts of it are still a mystery. We don’t even know if it’s terrestrial in origin, it’s so weird.”

[Wilkinson]

Many amateur theorists began to speculate in the early days of Shrunk about whether the virus was a government plot, a bioweapon, an alien invasion, or other wild theories. The internet was rife with cures and causes for shrinking, including garlic, dandelion root, shrinking violets and maple syrup. There were runs on growth hormones and certain cat medication. The CDC and WHO issued guidelines about cleaning surfaces and social distancing, and many events and public performances were cancelled, along with the acceptance of cash at retail stores. Wearing latex gloves in public began to be commonplace, both as protection from and an indicator of shrinking when they started to feel loose. While funny at first, as the shrinking continued it started to make life difficult for the virus’ victims, who began to be known as “shrinkees” - originally a mean joke but later adopted as the standard term. And where there are shrinkees, the term "Big" was adopted to refer to the fully-sized.

[footage of Patton Oswalt performing standup on stage, shrunk to 3 feet tall, the microphone bigger than his head]: “That's me, one of the shrinkees! I always wanted to lose weight but not like this.. not like this! My daughter is five and she’s the same height as me. She’s stopped seeing me as her dad and more like “fun-size toy daddy!” I dunno what i’m gonna do here, you know? I had to start shopping at Gymboree. I know this sounds cute and everything but I can’t recommend it! Other people get tragic, romantic diseases and I get to be pushed around by kindergarteners. If I get any smaller i’m going to have to live in someone’s pocket. I just played a cartoon rat. I can’t be the size of a rat in real life.”

[Wilkinson]

Mr. Oswalt eventually shrank to the height of 7.75 inches. He played Remy in the Broadway stage version of Ratatouille in 2019.

[shot of a tiny Patton Oswalt dressed as a rat atop a Big actor playing Linguini]

As summer turned to fall in 2013, the Shrunk virus had affected over two million people worldwide. Some countries, like France, China, South Korea and India, instituted strict lockdowns and social distancing requirements as well as surface cleaning policies. In the United States, rules varied from state to state. Regardless of policies Shrunk was widespread. It seemed like everyone knew someone who was shrinking, a family member or coworker or friend. There was a worldwide shortage of bleach and antibacterial soap, and support groups for shrinkees popped up on Facebook and Reddit and Twitter with advice on step stools and reacher/grabbers.

The virus itself was non-lethal, and didn’t seem to have any symptoms beyond shrinking and headaches. However, at unfamiliar reduced sizes, accidents and injuries for shrinkees became commonplace and safety equipment became crucial, including stepladders and ropes. It became quite hard for shrinkees to live daily life unassisted. As people shrink, they become more vulnerable and crime and attacks from both humans and animals became more of a risk factor.

[Interview: Jean Lawler, Animal Rescue Society]

[footage of huge dogs looming over their shrunken owners, struggling with food cans and leashes and kibble, etc]

“Shrunk was hard on pets. Many dogs had to be given up or euthanized when shrinkee owners were no longer able to control them. Dogs would find themselves in a dominant position over a human smaller than they were and assume they were now pack leaders, or their owners were now their pups. As time went on and shrinkees became smaller and smaller, domestic pet ownership became considerably more difficult for most. Cats are illegal in many districts with a lot of smaller shrinkees. Some shrinkees keep insects or tiny lizards as pets. It’s not all bad news though. Some shrinkees are able to handle smaller dogs and use them as riding animals.”

[Dr. Krutsz]

“We thanked our lucky stars every day that the virus wasn’t killing people directly and didn’t usually require hospitalization. At six months in, the smallest patient was 22 inches tall, quite small in those days, but able to function with assistance. We thought the virus had mostly run its course at this point. We were, in retrospect, deeply naive.”

[Wilkinson]

The first wave of the Shrunk pandemic was tapering off in the fall of 2013. The critical question facing local and national governments was what to do with an estimated ten million shrinkees, most of whom seemed to be between 2 and 4 feet tall - roughly the size of small children. It wasn’t known if they would ever grow back or if they would shrink again.

Carseats, stepladders, safety bars, and many items made for people with dwarfism were installed in thousands of homes, and shrinkees began to adapt to their new size. Offices either allowed shrinkees to work from home or installed new smaller desks and chairs for their use, and standing on tables during meetings became more commonplace.

[ Interview: Vernon Chiang, Little Persons Advocacy Organization representative. Age: 27. Height: 3 foot 2 inches]

“As a dwarf long before Shrunk came along, I was happy that finally the powers that be would be forced to cater to our needs. And it was great. At last we had products and policies that were size-inclusive. I can’t tell you what a great time it was to hold hands with the shrinkees and see real, lasting social change. It was very exciting for awhile. We were able to get traction on things we'd asked for for decades. Then, later, many of us found ourselves far bigger than most shrinkees, and when you've been used to being the smallest person in the room for years, that takes some adjustment (laughs).”

[Dr Krutsz]

“The shrinkees in the first wave of Shrunk were around 2-4 feet in height, usually. Most were still able to more or less function in the Big world with certain adaptations. We weren’t yet at the point of having to develop entire new housing and transport solutions for shrinkees. We didn’t know then if the shrinking process could reverse or if it was stopped permanently or just temporarily. Of course we now know that it’s irreversible - when you've shrunk you’re not getting big again, no matter what hormones or procedures we try. But you can usually shrink smaller. Shrinking is a one way trip.”

“Welcome back to our retrospective on the Shrunk virus. After the initial wave, in the winter of 2013 most countries assumed the pandemic was ending. The number of new cases had dropped and new cleaning and distancing policies had lessened the amount of transmission. Thanksgiving and Christmas came and went but the restrictions on social gatherings lent the holidays a muted tone. The smallest shrinkees were around the size of the shortest people with dwarfism that had existed prior to the pandemic. Some mild cases had only shrunk their victims by a foot or or a few inches.

A vaccine was under development and in the testing phases, due for rollout and mass inoculation in early 2014.

However, unbeknownst to most researchers there was a new mutation spreading that was airborne and more virulent. The SHR(u)-13-2 “Beta” Variant had appeared and was capable of re-infecting already shrunken individuals as well as shrinking people faster and smaller than the original baseline virus. It also had other, unpredicted side effects that will be discussed later.

[Dr. James Krutsz]

“We had thought the worst was over, and case counts were dropping. A surface virus can be defeated with rigorous hand washing and other procedures, but then already Shrunk patients began to manifest renewed size loss, and we realized we had a mutation on our hands. We learned to our dismay that contracting Shrunk once did not guarantee future immunity from it next time. Beta did not show up on the tests that had been developed for baseline at first, so we had to revamp all our procedures, and meanwhile it was hitting us harder and faster. It was in the depths of the Beta wave that we found the smallest patients were hitting well under 12 inches in height, and all the way down to 3 inches. It was then that i knew this was going to get a lot worse, and that everything about human society was going to change.”

[ Interview: Valerie Tonkin, compliance manager. Age 31. Height: 3.5 inches]

[A tiny young woman is wearing a loose T-shirt and yoga pants and is sitting cross legged on the lid of a jar of jam. She appears to be on a large kitchen tabletop surrounded by bowls and plates much larger than she is.]

“I got Shrunk in the first wave, to 22 inches. I was in college at the time, and I thought i was so tiny I wasn’t going to survive. Today I’d barely come up to old me’s ankle. And I’m way bigger than the smallest shrinkees I know, like my college roomie Dana, who’s down in the millimeters, and fits between my toes. Uh, don’t ask how i know that, hahah, are you gonna put that in the final edit?”

[Dr. Krutsz]

“Around this time we started to develop our terminology. Shrinkee was a general term for anyone who had shrunk by any amount. Anyone between 2 and 5 feet tall was classified as “Mini”, to be distinct from those with dwarfism (who, by the way, were not immune to the virus). Anyone between 12 and 24 inches in size is classed “Small”, and 6-12 inchers are “Tiny”.

Under 6 inchers are “Micro”, but later we had to add “Nano” for shrinkees under 1 inch. It remains to be seen if “Pico” and “Femto” and such will need to be deployed.

[Jeanne Wilkinson]

The vaccine was the number one priority of various world governments, and several companies had produced vaccine candidates for approval in the winter and early spring of 2014. Stablent, Keepgro, and Bigufix were approved by the FDA and other health agencies in February 2014 and vaccine rollouts were issued, with millions lining up for the injections. A certain percentage of the population strongly refused vaccinations, for various reasons, some calling themselves “proshrinkers” and some even deliberately trying to contract Shrunk. Many of these individuals are now extremely tiny.

Other protestors believed the vaccine was ineffective, claiming the virus was a government plot to control the public by taking away their size. The “Stay Big” movement, as they called themselves, subscribed to an elaborate conspiracy theory involving a theft of size by the United Nations and tiny lizard aliens. Stay Biggers regard the shrinkees as “bugs” or vermin to be tortured and crushed. Such individuals are arrested like any other serial killers when found. Torturing, eating or killing a shrinkee of any size is a criminal offense the way it would be for anyone.

The vaccine did work against baseline SHRu-13 and provided immunity with boosters for some time. However, the other variants did not seem to respond well to the vaccine, so it was still possible to contract Shrunk Beta or future variants. The population of shrinkees continued to increase at almost the same rate as before, and infections led to smaller shrinkees.

The economic impact of Shrunk was profound and increasing. The governments of the world took various emergency measures to prevent a complete disaster, with mixed success.

[ Interview: Senator Bill Veers (D-Mass). Age: 59 Height: 6 1/2 inches]

[Senator Veers is sitting at a doll-sized armchair in a scaled-down version of a Senate office with federalist furniture, and one wall is a row of large law books taller than he is]

“I’m proud to say that during Shrunk, we managed to keep the economy on a reasonably even keel with stimulus payments of $1000 to all shrinkees and job guarantees paid to employers. We also passed legislation to prohibit size-based discrimination and serious penalties for abusing or violating the consent and autonomy of any uh, size-diminished individuals.”

[Jeanne Wilkinson, voice-over, accompanied by footage of shrinkee workers on oil rigs, lumberjacks, etc]

Shrunk had a major effect on the military, industry, sports, and many other areas of society. Shrinkees who were too small to operate helicopters, trucks, aircraft, oil rigs, forestry, manufacturing, or other blue-collar jobs were forced to go on disability leave and many lost their jobs to Bigs. Discrimination was rampant, despite legislation, and shrinkees can still have trouble finding jobs and accommodations to fit their new sizes. It was made all the worse by shrinking again months after you thought you were at your final size. Many shrinkees are reliant on basic-income stipends for living expenses, indexed to their size.

[Wilkinson walks up to a table, at which there are a row of tiny, plastic houses that look like architectural models or dollhouses, in various sizes]

Special housing modules for shrinkees began to appear around this time: 3-d printed modular apartment or house units, customized to the shrinkee’s proportions, and filled with dollhouse furniture. These “tiny houses” could be a condo or a McMansion. A smartphone on the wall could be a home theater. If a shrinkee was a family member or spouse of a Big, their housing could be kept in the full-sized home. Alternatively they were stacked in vacant lots or RV parks, formed into apartment complexes or compounds, covered with bird nets, provided with hookups for water and electricity, and rented out at low cost to shrinkees. A $1000 stimulus check could purchase one of these housing units, fully furnished, with a year of utilities and maintenance. More luxurious shrinkee housing developments would appear in later years, and many shrinkees became avid fans of tiny home improvement.

[a clip from the cable home improvement show Tiny Beautiful with a designer showing their tiny home makeover]

“We did the living room in the very on-trend borrower chic. The spool of thread table and the pencil support beams provide a homey, mouse-hole touch. We upgraded the wiring to USB-C and there’s a walk in fridge. All furnishings are fully adjustable in case of further shrinking and there’s low level conversation tables and ladders if any nanos come to visit.”

[ Interview: Chef Trey Partridge, owner-operator: Tiny Bites Restaurant. Age: 33. Height: 4.25 inches]

[Chef is preparing a single huge blueberry, cut artfully into thick slices]

I got Shrunk in the Beta wave, and I was running a restaurant at the time. My business partners removed me when I dropped under 2 feet and I agreed with them - I wasn't able to run the line as I wanted so I took my severance and took a break. For a few months I didn't have much going for me, feeling sorry for myself, but then I realized that shrinkees needed to eat too, and I managed to scrape up enough to open Tiny Bites.

[Trey shows the walk-ins and storage pantries of the restaurant, full of giant cans and spice bottles as tall as he is]

"Look at this: one bag of Big groceries and we can run this place for a week. And last year we opened Tinier Bites for nanos and it's been going gangbusters. They eat even LESS food. And then a few months ago my original partners, still Bigs, contacted me about a special project. But I can't talk about that just yet."

[Wilkinson]

The cost of living as a shrinkee is quite low. A shrinkee can survive for days on an amount of food that a Big would eat in one meal, or one bite. This cost savings is significant and has led to many people deliberately catching the virus and becoming shrinkees out of economic necessity.

Clothing, furniture and other items shrinkees might need is available in any size these days. The costs of materials for a jacket worn by a tiny person is low, but the labor costs and other factors are the same as a Big’s so mini, small, tiny, or nano clothing and items can be more expensive than expected.

The costs of food and housing may be low, but a shrinkee’s resources might be lower still. Since 2014, homeless shrinkees appeared in corners of parks and backyards. They live as they can manage on scraps and discarded food, and the human rights crisis of these unhoused shrinkees is ongoing and severe. It’s hard enough to be a homeless person in a major city, and even harder when a rat is a major threat. Many such shrinkees have died to local wildlife or weather exposure. Charity groups have worked to provide housing units and improved safety for shrinkees who need them.

Aside from housing, clothing and feeding millions of shrinkees, another problem is interacting with Bigs. While shrinkees down to a few inches tall can communicate with Bigs, very tiny shrinkees can find it difficult to be heard or seen without amplification.

[Dr. Krutsz]

"The main thing about being a shrinkee, especially a micro or nano, is that distances become vast. At my nano size it would take me hours to walk the length of a single footstep from a Big. Also, my voice is too high-pitched and squeaky to be heard by any Big or mini. I happen to have access to a 1.6 meter tall bipedal robot that I can pilot from a cockpit in the robot's head. Those Providence Dynamics mecha are a godsend, as I can maneuver in the world as if I was a Big. My face is shown on the screen and my voice is pitched down to Big levels, and I can walk, socialize and conduct business with Bigs without any obstacles. The robot can fold up and travel in airplane luggage compartments. However, those custom robots are not available to most shrinkees, and the cost is significant. My robot cost over $100,000 and requires frequent maintenance. The time may come when those robots are more common and affordable, however. In the meantime there’s the Remys.”

[Wilkinson, in front of what looks like a wingless helicopter with a glass canopy and seat with controls. A large rubber torus protrudes from one side - it’s a gigantic earbud, like a Bluetooth headset with a pilot seat.]

Robots are not the only way for smaller shrinkees to interact directly with Bigs. The “Remy”, also called the Marble, or just the Earpiece, looks like an earbud with a seat. The shrinkee sits on this seat and can speak to a Big through the earpiece and using sound tones from the controls. [examples of various beeps and chirps] The shrinkee pilot gives the Big commands, like “walk over there” or “approach Mr. Jones”. When the shrinkee speaks, the Big speaks by proxy, without consciously thinking about it. The Big in effect becomes m a piloted giant robot under control of the shrinkee. Larger shrinkees can position on the Big’s shoulder.

It takes a certain amount of training to work as a proxy and they are paid quite handsomely for their time. The Big cannot be made to do anything illegal or dangerous and the role is similar to that of any servant or bodyguard. Remy proxies have become common sights at many conferences, business meetings and in-person social events.

[Interview, with subtitle: Perry K, full time proxy. Age 32, height: 6 feet]

“I’ve been a remote proxy for shrinkees for four years now, for hundreds of different pilot-clients. It’s work that requires you to listen and respond without question. Once I’m in the zone I don’t even remember specifics about what the pilot had me do. I will balk and refuse orders if it’s something dangerous but otherwise I’m at their command.”

[Footage of a TED talk with Perry K speaking while piloted by a 3-inch tall Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Computer]

“I quite like my role, and when I am working with a pilot I really synch with it’s a true pleasure. Not every pilot is skilled, but most shrinkees can pick it up after about fifteen minutes. It’s a little strange when I am commanded to do something intimate like hug a shrinkee’s Big spouse, but I’ve done it, and while I don’t do more, other proxies will perform other services for, uh, additional costs.”

[Wilkinson]

Transportation is another area where shrinkees have certain restrictions. While shrinkees with special adapted controls can drive cars and trucks, it’s more difficult at smaller sizes. Just getting in and out of the car is a challenge. And most insurers and state dmvs will not allow shrinkees below mini size to drive.

[Wilkinson, with a diagram of a city sidewalk: most of it is painted yellow, with narrower blue and red stripes parallel to the yellow zone]

For shrinkees on foot, who leave the safety of their housing units, the sidewalks in most towns and cities have been marked by size. Bigs are required to keep to the yellow markings, and the blue stripes are for minis, smalls and larger tinies. Micros and nanos do not usually walk but fly drones to their destinations.

[Wilkinson, standing beside a single person drone]

For more and more shrinkees the only way to fly is by drone.

[Footage of drones lifting and flying with boxes of shrinkees in seats like a bus, as well as sleek single-occupant small drones the size of toys]

[Wilkinson: voice over]

Shrinkees under 12 inches can travel in a so-called 'lunchbox' or pelican case: a small protected chamber with transparent walls that can be carried in a Big car or by hand, in a rack on a bus or train, or by drone. Each pelican can hold one or more shrinkees in luxurious comfort or functional safety. Passenger drones buzzing through our cities skies have become a common sight, taking shrinkees from their tiny housing complexes to offices or schools, or on longer trips to an airport or vacation destination, often controlled directly by a shrinkee pilot instead of remotely. Smaller, personal drones are available for one or two shrinkees, more like a sports car or personal helicopter. There is even a low-altitude air traffic control for shrinkees to avoid mid-air drone collisions. Outdoor cafe patio areas can be roped off as a drone landing and recharging zone, complete with tables for various sized shrinkees to enjoy snacks and socializing.

[Wilkinson is standing in front of a large table of statistics and a bar chart showing exponential line of increase labeled “Number of Shrinkees”, both worldwide and in the United States]

By the end of 2014, despite vaccinations and mitigation, the number of shrinkees had risen to over 50 million worldwide and an unknown number more had symptoms yet to appear. On January 1 2015, the smallest shrinkee on record was 26 millimeters tall, just over one inch in height.  The average shrinkee was around 10 inches in height.

As the years passed, the number of shrinkees only continued to rise, despite additional attempts at curbing the spread of the virus. The United States elections were won by the candidate who promised the most benefits to shrinkees, and the 11 inch tall President Bailey was sworn in standing atop the Bible in the famous inauguration photo. He was re-elected in 2020.

By last year, the number of shrinkees worldwide exceeded 1.5 billion. The virus is still out there, and 17 known variant mutations exist. The smallest known shrinkee as of 2023 is 1.1mm tall, and the largest percentage of shrinkees is the United States where over 40% of the population has shrunk to some degree or another. The average shrinkee is 5.75 inches tall and that number has been dropping for some time as new variants hit harder. Some shrinkees have shrunk five or six times over the years as they acquire different variants of the virus.

When we get back from the break, we will continue with our look at the cultural impact of the Shrunk virus, ten years later. The next segment deals frankly with issues of sexuality and is intended for mature viewers only. You’re watching Cover to Cover, on CTN.

[Wilkinson]

Welcome back to the program. We would be remiss in this retrospective if we did not cover the many cultural impacts of the Shrunk virus, and by far the largest has been the popularity of size-related sexuality.

One of the well-known symptoms of the Beta and later variants that we neglected to previously mention was an increase in libido among shrinkees. Most shrinkees require far more frequent sexual release than Bigs do, 8-10 times as much in some cases, and later variant cases even more so. And shrinkees tend to love playing with shrinkees close to their size, with smaller and bigger shrinkees, and especially with Bigs. Before Shrunk, so called "GTS" or "giant/tiny" porn was a niche fetish, and now it is by far the most popular genre of adult entertainment, eclipsing all other types of pornography by a wide margin. Every conceivable combination of Bigs and shrinkees of all genders, kinks, body shapes, and sizes, is available for instant viewing on any one of a dozen streaming platforms, with more content available every minute. In addition, there's at least ten major hookup apps that serve to cater to Bigs and shrinkees who wish to meet up in person for casual encounters or romantic dates.

[ Interview with subtitle: Valerie Tonkin, compliance manager. age 31. Height: 3.5 inches]

[Valerie is no longer sitting on the jam jar: it's open and she’s standing next to it. Her loose T-shirt is covering down to her thighs, but she is bare-legged and removed her yoga pants recently.]

"Ever since I became a shrinkee, especially the second time, I turned into a little hornball. (laughs) You're sure this is okay? (noise of assent from off screen). Well, my Big boyfriend is coming in, and I'll show you what he and I like to do."

[Valerie slips off her T-shirt and, stark naked, grasps the edge of the jam jar and steps into it with a practiced motion, her feet and legs sliding into the strawberry jam up to her waist]

"Ooh, cold! (laughs). There's Ryan now.. he looks ready for breakfast.."

[Valerie waves her arms as a series of loud booming footsteps are heard, shaking the dishes on the tabletop slightly. The camera pans to the right and tilts up to reveal a gigantic, towering male Big, in a vintage Pearl Jam concert T-shirt, the crotch of his boxer shorts right at the level with the table surface forming a bulging wall of dark gray fabric. An enormous 28-year-old with bedhead and stubble looks down at the food and plates on the table, taking a slice of toast and, in a way that suggests indifference, his huge fingers pluck Valerie's body out of the jam jar, lifting her up to his face and engulfing her tiny legs and midsection into his mouth, slurping on her body like it's the most ordinary thing in the world, like he was licking jam off a spoon. Valerie's cries of multiple orgasms can be heard all the way down at the table surface by the shrinkee camera crew some hundred scale feet below.]

[Cut to Valerie toweling herself off, some minutes later]

"We do stuff like that all the time. I mean all the time. Getting put in his mouth is my favorite, but we've done lots of other things too. Shrunk was the best thing that ever happened to our sex life."

[Ryan looking at the camera, a different film crew and interviewer. He looks slightly nervous and is blushing]

"Y-yeah.. I know that looked like I didn't care. She loves it when I act all 'unaware', as she says, and that gets her off, so that's how i play it. But then there's other times when I'm .. aware? (laughs) I didn't know I'd like having a shrinkee girlfriend this much but I gotta say, it has its privileges. (laughs) We have fun. Its a good way to stay creative in the bedroom.”

[ Interview with subtitle: Dr. Jen Spalding. Specialist in shrinkee sexuality. Age: 37, height: 1 inch]

“The body of a shrinkee changes density and mass when they are smaller, which has certain properties. It allows many shrinkees to perform physical feats worthy of Olympic-caliber athletes at full size. Their bodies also become more resilient at smaller sizes. As a result they can withstand high-intensity environments that would risk injury or even death to a Big in a similar situation. They can withstand heat and pressure and lack of air that would cause suffocation or crushing, with no more than some slight discomfort. If dropped from a height they fall safely to the ground and rarely sustain injuries. Some shrinkees’ bodies can stretch to accommodate penetrative objects larger than they are. Thanks to these physical properties and their increased libido, many shrinkees enjoy being used as sex toys, being inserted into various orifices, or spending long hours stuck in a Big’s underwear or panties, worn as jewelry or parts of clothing. Or, as many shrinkees will tell you, they like getting stepped on.”

[ Interview: "Giantess Marissa”, sex worker. Age 26. Height: 5’2"]

"I love my shrinkees. I do. I got a nonstop stream of customers of any size from other Bigs all the way down to millimeter-sized specks. And my main speciality is foot play and stepping. It's what they want, it's what I give 'em."

[Marissa, a slightly heavyset woman with dark hair and red lipstick wearing a black lacy bustier and black stirrup pants is in a modern, sparsely furnished studio, with a glossy varnished concrete floor, looming over a kneeling group of naked shrinkees of different sizes. The smallest is about an inch tall, the largest 4 inches, all of whom are male and visibly erect as they stare up at Marissa's bare foot hovering above them. On shelves in the studio can be seen BDSM equipment of various sizes, as well as crushable model buildings and houses, other sex toys and footwear from flip flops to high heels to sneakers.]

"Did you little insects feel like you could look me in the eye? That's a bad idea.. you're going to have to be punished. This foot's coming down … slow … better hope you survive..”

[She's clearly done this many many times, but the shrinkees are quivering in delight. With her big toe, she pushes them over so they’re lying on their backs, splayed under the shadow of her huge Size 8 bare foot. The inch-tall shrinkee squeaks and squirts a tiny ribbon of cum into the air. The ball and arch of Marissa's foot comes down on the small group of shrinkees and she grinds her foot against them - pushing hard, but not enough to put her full weight on them, just enough that they feel the pressure of being firmly stepped on. She rolls the shrinkees under her foot and squeezes her toes around each one for almost a minute. All four shrinkees have ejaculated profusely when she lifts her foot up. Marissa grins to the camera.]

"Easiest $400 i ever made.”

[Cut to Marissa later getting a pedicure from another group of shrinkees, applying pink nail polish to her toes with tiny paint rollers]

“I have to take super good care of these moneymakers. My foot care bill is through the roof, but it’s easy work and my customers love it. One guy comes in literally every day, a 3/4 incher, he just has me pin him under my big toe until he cums. I press down pretty hard but the harder I press the more he likes it.”

[interviewer off-camera: “Have you ever injured a shrinkee accidentally?”]

“No, I can confidently say no. I am a professional. I take extremely good care with my stepping and make sure that I don’t push too hard. I prefer smaller shrinkees as they’re tougher and I don’t have to worry as much. Some shrinkees really get off on crush and beg me to really squish them, but like, I don’t want to go to jail (laughs). Honestly, I’d be devastated if I really hurt any of my clients. The whole art of what I do is to go right up to the line of danger without crossing into harm. We use safewords and SSC practices. It’s important to be safe even with these tough little shrinkees. Part of that means assuming a certain amount of risk, though, and my clients do sign liability waivers.”

[The four shrinkees who got stepped on are getting cleaned up and dressed in a small-scaled locker room near Marissa’s studio]

“We go see her as a group, we’re all fans of hers on Myycro and Insta and Sizebox.” “I have an autographed toenail clipping on my wall.” “She’s amazing. I’m in here as often as I can. I’ve probably spent 3 grand on visits.” “WE LOVE YOU GIANTESS MARISSA!”

[Wilkinson, back on the main set with the giant projected legs]

Not every shrinkee opts for such physical adventures. Spending hours as jewelry or decorations on clothing is a popular option, and many stores offer products specific to keeping shrinkees close to the bodies of Bigs or larger shrinkees.

[Clip from a youtube video, ChiisaiChan98, a 21-year-old female Big with dyed aqua blond hair in twintails and a pink anime-themed T-shirt]

“What’s up bigs and littles, we’re at the Tristate Mall here in Mahwah, New Jersey. We’re going to check out the offerings at a couple stores here, lets go!”

[ChiisaiChan98 looks at and displays various plastic and crystal jewelry pendants, earrings, body piercings, bracelets, etc. All of which have small chambers and panels to hold shrinkees of various sizes. People up to about six inches tall are held in place with clips and cuffs and can be part of a corsage or a hair accessory. Smaller shrinkees down to the sub-centimeter size can be held in small baubles or jewels, some with magnifying glasses installed for easier viewing. Some containers resemble test tubes, or jars, pill capsules or candies. The store features shrinkee mannequins, realistic little posable rubber dolls in sizes that will fit in the various pieces, for testing purposes.]

“Check out what I picked up!” [The youtuber holds up a pair of round earrings, each with a pink transparent jeweled pop-open chamber that can hold a half-inch shrinkee. There’s a “wowww!” sound effect]

“And I know just who’s gonna go in here for my brunch date.. that’ll be in the next video! Don’t forget to like comment and subscribe!”

[Dr Spalding, voice over with footage of various body ornaments and jewelry containing various tiny sizes:]

Shrinkee-holding body ornaments range from plastic costume pieces found at malls, to expensive custom jewelry with precious materials, like this rose gold birdcage pendant designed to hold shrinkees up to 1cm in height from Tiffany.

Shrinkees willingly displayed as trinkets for hours are not being humiliated, although there’s a certain amount of objectification at play. They are being treasured. It’s quite thrilling to be a piece of fancy jewelry and oohed and aahed over by a group of Bigs. And like the Remy proxies, the Bigs main job is to carry the shrinkees and display them proudly.”

[Wilkinson]

It’s not just jewelry. Lingerie with pockets and fittings to hold shrinkees close to a bigger’s nether regions began to appear with the first wave of tinies small enough to ride in someone’s underpants. Bras, panties, briefs, and any kind of underwear are available with elastic straps and small pockets to hold shrinkees in quite close quarters for many hours.

[Calley Renwick, grad student. Age: 23. Height: 5’6”]

[Footage of a young collegiate woman in jeggings and a hoodie, carrying a backpack. Calley has dark blond hair in a ponytail and glasses, checking her phone, standing in the Bigs line at the coffee shop, climbing onto the bus, strolling the streets of the midsize city where she lives]

“You’d never guess I was carrying two shrinkees tucked in my panties all day, would you? (laughs) I’m on a date with my poly partners but you’d never realize it. Look, there you can see me adjust my pants slightly - i’m moving Evie a tiny bit where her leg was digging into my inner thigh. She’s five inches so I definitely can feel her in there. Braden is only an inch and a quarter, so he can get right up inside me if he’s not careful. They like to spend the whole day with me in there, only getting breaks when I go to the bathroom. It’s a turnon for all three of us and when I finally get home and rub myself through my panties, I can usually feel Evie and Braden cum before I do. Some days they stay in my bra and i can feel them rubbing against my nipples all day.”

[Dr. Krutsz]

“A human ovum is about 0.1mm in diameter, about the size of a baseball to me. It’s a remarkable thing to hold in your hands.”

[Wilkinson]

With all this sexual play, the question of pregnancy is unavoidable. It has been found that two humans of vastly differing size cannot impregnate one another even with direct contact of sperm with the ova. The fertilization process requires sperm cells of a certain size and if they are more than double or less than half the size expected, the ovum can not accept them. This natural contraception is accompanied by use of the Pill.

[footage of a baby in a huge cradle in a maternity ward surrounded by magnifying glasses and nurses changing a diaper with tweezers]

Pregnancies among shrinkees do occur, and the first shrinkee baby was born in 2015. Baby S was born to two shrinkees of 8 and 9 inches in height and is now a healthy 8 year old at 11 inches tall. There doesn’t seem to be a match between size of offspring to the size of the shrinkee parents. Since then, hundreds of children have been born tiny and both they and Big-born shrinkee kids are attending schools and daycares built for their size.

[Dr Spalding]

“Shrinkees, like Bigs, exist in all orientations and gender identities. There are gay, bisexual, pan, and heterosexual Bigs and shrinkees, and trans, genderfluid and non-binary Bigs and shrinkees. The shared experiences of size play and the exploratory attitude of many shrinkees has led to many questioning their straight and narrow preferences.”

[Stewart Hounslow, programmer. Age 49. Height: 2.75 inches]

“I was at a Bigs and Shrinkees mixer and found myself getting wedged into the jeans of a friend of mine while he was making out with a 3-foot woman we know from work. One thing led to another and I ended up squirming down into his undies and jerking him off with my whole body, which isn’t something I ever expected to happen, but we both came so hard that it happened again later, uh, several times. I guess I’m not quite as straight as I thought before I got Shrunk. Playing with a guy hits different when his dick’s three times bigger than you. I was pretty straight before I shrunk but now.. anything goes.”

[Dr. Spalding]

“It’s not all playful wine and roses. Much of my job is negotiating partnerships of large size disparity. Relationships are strained when one partner shrinks and the other doesn’t - or they don’t shrink enough, or too much. One partner might exceed the other’s preferences for size. Not every shrinkee wants to be tiny and many Bigs want to be shrinkees but are not. Divorces have occurred, as well as infidelity and sudden radical personality shifts. Domestic abuse of shrinkees is an unfortunate reality. An organization called Shrinkees Looking Out exists to get shrinkees out of dangerous relationship situations and into safer environments. Their anonymous hotline is below.

[Graphic with phone number and website]

Also, when shrinkees are highly religious or have strongly defined cultural practices, things can be strained. Male shrinkees could be considered unmanly or effeminate, and suffer great crises of confidence. Prior to Shrunk, many men were self-conscious about their height and would wear shoe lifts or refuse to date women taller than they were. Post-Shrunk, those concerns have changed for many.

[Kit Cuyler, investment banker. Age: 27. Height: 7.5 inches]

“Shrunk was real hard at first on a lot of my coworkers. Finance bros, you know the type.. guys heavily into perfection and dominance. Rich and powerful, six feet four, chiseled physique, fancy car, nice apartment in downtown Manhattan, different women every night, your Patrick Bateman alpha grindset dudes. Guy like that drops to the size of a GI Joe figure and he gets suicidal. But then something weird happened - it became sort of a status symbol to be tiny. The athletic and sexual performance benefits of Shrunk were so attractive that soon even Bigs who hadn’t got the virus started to seek it out and wanted to shrink. So now you got those same finance bros and they’re like, an inch and a half tall and doing just unbelievable sex stuff every night, flying sick drone-cars, living in massive 50 square foot mansion-penthouses. You can get high as hell on a stupidly tiny amount of coke or Molly. They still make good money, you dont have to be Big to trade derivatives, and the money goes way further. The kind of luxury you can get as a shrinkee with some money is insane. And you just use a Remy if you need to interact with Bigs at a conference or whatever.”

[Wilkinson, standing next to a series of spotlit movie posters in the main dark set]

Traditionally pandemics aren’t something people want to immortalize in art, but Shrunk impacted popular culture in a historic way. Movies like The Incredible Shrinking Man received high budget remakes and an Emmy-award winning HBO dramatic series. Ant-Man and Wasp became the lead characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since many actors were now shrinkees, most movies incorporated the actors’ size difference into the plot, and many romantic comedies featured shrinkee/Big relations and increasingly explicit sex scenes. Horror movies, comedies, and animated films all began to feature size disparities and shrinkee characters as routine elements, both in villain and hero roles.

And the world of fashion began to use shrinkees in increasingly elaborate ways.

[A montage of red carpet premieres, awards galas, and runway designer shows, featuring celebrities and models wearing elaborate outfits of shrinkee jewelry, earrings, bracelets, or garments made with chains of shrinkees or draping mesh fabric consisting of rows of tiny naked shrinkees bound to one another with fine metallic threads. A 1cm tall Emma Watson worn as jewelry in a pendant in the cleavage of Kat Dennings, herself a 24 inch shrinkee being carried like a toddler by an anonymous Big. Shows from Paris Fashion Week with models carrying scaled-down runways on which shrinkee models exhibit smaller clothes. Miley Cyrus slurping on an excited, naked shrinkee like a lollipop at a premiere red carpet. Other parties and galas feature shrinkees displayed as prominent decorations and jewelry, and carried by Bigs in an almost subservient way. ]

[Wilkinson]

We will return after the break, with a wrap-up and some final thoughts about what Shrunk has meant as a society, a nation and what this strange new world order we find ourselves in really means.

[COMMERCIAL: A montage: A 7 inch male shrinkee is held in a feminine hand, squirming as he is lowered to a Big’s vagina and pushed inside her like a dildo. A small test tube full of dozens of nano-sized shrinkees is poured out onto a Big’s massive breast and nipples. An enormous pair of lips and teeth opens to reveal a drooling mouth, the camera zooming in down the throat in a POV shot. A gigantic pink and white sneaker kaTHOOMs down onto a model city, crushing cars and tiny buildings under it. An inch-tall shrinkee dives like a high diver between a 16 inch shrinkee’s lubed up breasts, while she is straddling the erection of a Big. A Big woman’s hand masturbates herself to a massive squirting orgasm while shoving in a squirming couple of 2-3 inch shrinkees. A wineglass half-full of at least a hundred very tiny shrinkees, being tilted and poured into the open mouth of a beautiful Big, who swirls them around in her mouth for a few moments before spitting them into a bowl like a wine tasting.

[Jeanne Wilkinson, standing before a projected image of the Earth from space]

Ten years after we first began to encounter the Shrunk virus, the world is a very different place. Almost half of the United States population is now a shrinkee, and estimates say there will be a shrinkee majority by 2028. And not many people have a problem with it.

[a number of brief street interviews with shrinkees and bigs at a local college]

“12 inches is the new Big, they say (laughs). Almost everyone I know is a tiny or smaller. And the Bigs I know love being around us.. but if you’re a bigger shrinkee you can still be that and get the benefits of the hashtag #tinylifestyle.”

“Shrinkee is a little outdated. It’s kinda boomer. My friends call each other tinies or micros. Like I’m 4 inches, she’s around 2 inches, he’s a 8 incher, I have most in common with people between half and double my size. Bigs are just.. so big. More like playgrounds than people.(laughs)”

“I’m Big right now, but I kind of wish I was a shrinkee.”

[Jeanne Wilkinson, wrapping up]

The economy, how we live, what we do for fun, our families and friends, everything about ourselves has been forever changed by Shrunk, for good and ill. Far from being victims of a disease, shrinkees report themselves healthier, happier, and enjoying a lower cost of living, and a lower environmental impact. Reducing the physical size of a third of the world’s population has led to decreased carbon emissions and pollution, with a direct benefit to the reduction of global warming. The UN Council on the Environment has chosen to recommend voluntary Shrunk exposure and vaccine development has slowed.  It may end up that being tiny becomes the norm in human society.

It became clear to me in the preparation of this documentary that shrinkees are far from the insignificant specks and humiliated victims of much giant/tiny fiction. Their roles played as pets, decorations, and sex toys are far from degrading or humiliating. On the contrary, shrinkees WANT those things to happen, to explore bodies like landscapes, to be displayed like precious jewelry. It is Bigs that are catering to the shrinkee’s desires. Shrinkees are the ones calling the shots, sometimes literally. If there are to be leaders of this “new world order” it is the shrinkees. I didn’t encounter a single Big who didn’t love and respect shrinkees as much as they did any other human being regardless of size.

We don’t know how small any of us will get, or if the effects of Shrunk will ever fade, but for now, we are learning to adapt to our new sizes.

[C2C closing theme music and credits. While the credits scroll on the screen, we see a series of quick shots of each person interviewed in the video so far. It seems to be from the setup phase, with lights and crews visible occasionally in the background, or they are testing microphones and clapper boards]

“I’m Dr. James Krutz and I’m a shrinkee, at 1.2 millimeters.”

“I’m Dr. Tania Khatun, and I’m a mini shrinkee at 2 feet 4 inches.”

“I’m Vernon Chiang, and I’m a Big at 2 foot 2 inches. (smiles)”

“I’m Valerie Tonkin, and I’m a micro at 3.5 inches.”

“I’m Senator Bill Veers, and I’m a shrinkee at 6 1/2 inches.”

“I’m Trey Partridge, and I’m a shrinkee at 4.25 inches.”

“I’m Perry K and I’m a Big at 6 feet tall.”

“I’m Ryan Bakdow, and I’m a Big at 5’5”.”

“I’m Dr. Jen Spalding, and I’m a shrinkee at 1 inch.”

“I’m Giantess Marissa, and I’m a Big at 5 foot 2 inches. (smiles, wiggles her toes at the camera)”.

“I’m Calley Renwick, and I’m a Big at 5’6”.”

“I’m Stewart Hounslow, and I’m a shrinkee at 2 11/16 inches, or 65 millimeters.”

“I’m Kit Cuyler, and I’m a shrinkee at 7.5 inches.”

“I’m ChiisaiChan98 and I’m a big at 5’1”, but I wish I was a shrinkee (laughs)”

“And I’m Jeanne Wilkinson. I’m a shrinkee at 5/8ths of an inch. Thank you for watching, and goodnight.”

[The camera pulls back to reveal the large set is actually about the size of a shoebox, and the items that were in there as large props are either regular objects or small photos. A mixed camera crew of shrinkees and Bigs is milling around as the camera fades out]
