Prologue

Its funny how nothing good ever happens to guy named Jed. You never hear about someone named Jeff having to go through a struggle of life and death. Its always about a boy named Sunshine, or some other awkwardly strange name. This story is no different in that respect.

Jed wasn’t an overly smart person, but he gave off that image. He was shy and quiet. He grew up never having a lot of friends. At this point, you’re probably thinking. Oh, its going to be one of those stories. This is just another loser type person. Well, Jed wasn’t a loser and its not of those stories. Jed was a really nice guy. He just grew up alone. At a very young age Jed learned a hard lesson. The only person you can count on is yourself. The only person who won’t let you down is you. Everyone you will ever love will always let you down, maybe not intentionally, maybe not because they want too, but because its human nature.

Jed was a bastard, not because of what he did, but an actual bastard child. His parents were never married. He grew up with his mom, not really ever knowing his father. He would step into his life every now and then, but how can you love someone who is never there? Someone who says they love you, but never calls on your birthday just to say hey, someone who will promise you the world and not even deliver a grain of sand.

These lessons made Jed grow up at a young age. He was responsible, his mom trusted him to be alone while she was at work. She knew that Jed would be okay by himself, and he was. You can probably already guess that Jed was just a good person.

He had short black hair, slightly overweight, but not fat. He was like everyone else when they get out of high school. No clue about how things work in the real world. He had been accepted into a technical school. He thought that he wanted to be a mechanic. What he didn’t count on was not being able to pay for school. Being an only child and only having his mom, money was always tight for Jed. He wasn’t rich, but he wasn’t poor.

Reality came crashing down on Jed pretty hard. He moped around for a bit then he knew that if he wanted to go to school he would have to work for it. He applied at a Coffee house figuring that it was as good a place as any to make some money. That is where Jed’s story begins. It all starts in small Coffee shop in Seattle Washington.

Chapter 1 by asukafan2001

Chapter One

Jed was a newbie. He was starting his first day at Seattle’s Best Coffee. He wasn’t exactly crazy about working here, but he needed the extra cash for college and it would be a good place to meet women.

Jed was slightly below average in height standing at a whopping five foot four inches tall, short spiky black hair, a bit overweight. There wasn’t much too really draw attention to him.

Jed headed into the Coffee shop and immediately was greeted by a blonde haired woman, about the same height as Jed. She smiled warmly at him as she pushed an apron at him. Jed stared at her for a moment before he grabbed the apron and put it on.

            “Hi, Erin”

            “No, my name is Jed.”

“No Erin is my name; it’s nice to meet you Jed.” Sweetly replied Erin as Jed blushed embarrassingly as he followed her behind the counter.

“What do you know how to do?” curtly responds Erin as she hands a customer his Latte.

“Umm, well not much, I have never been much of a coffee person.” responds Jed as he kicks and plays with his foot a bit while staring at the floor.

The morning flew by, as people on their way to work would stop in and get something. Jed was a bit nervous at first as it was just him and Erin in the store, but he manned the counter as she made the coffees. Already they had a near flawless operation. All that changed however as eleven approached. Erin decided to go on her break leaving the store in Jed’s hands.

Time seemed to slow as the minute hand nearly stopped as Jed was left waiting, praying that no one would come in; his wish was however not granted as the door chime sounded.

A cute younger looking woman strode towards the counter ordering a Mocha, then informing him she would be right back as he she headed towards the bathroom. Jed watched her short brown hair swish back and forth; the dark black sunglasses which acted almost like a headband.  Jed nervously looked over at the various coffee machines. A twitch started in the pit of his stomach as Jed glanced over at her coffee order. His palms began to sweat as Jed turned on the machine. The froth from the coffee began to spill over the top of the glass. Jed howled in pain as he quickly put the lid on the cup, and stepped backwards blowing on his hand. As Jed stepped backwards he was unaware of how close he was to the cappuccino machine.

“God Damn it” Jed screamed as his back pressed against the hot cappuccino machine which caused him to whip around spilling the top shelf of imported tea’s and coffees down upon himself. Jed’s head pounded against the tiled floor as a mixture of the tea’s and coffee’s slipped into his mouth. Jed gagged several times as a sick like feeling washed over him. His body began to shake like he was having a seizure, then almost as quickly as the shaking begun it subsided, but everything looked different. Giant skyscraper sized brown boulders were littered across the landscape as far as he could see.

“Excuse me? Sir?” the voice rolled across the land like cracks of thunder soaring across the midnight sky. Jed looked up unable to see her at all. The counter was much too high.

“Hello” The floor began to shake as seismic rumbles caused the brown skyscrapers to shift from left the right. Jed couldn’t believe what his eyes were telling him. The enormous black buffalo shoes came stomping into view. Jed watched in fear as her left foot easily dwarfed the brown skyscraper sized coffee and tea grounds that were littered across the floor.  Jed turned quickly realizing the gravity of the situation. He looked back as her foot lifted up off the ground sending a gusting wind across the floor nearly knocking him to the ground. His heart was beating like a piston as the coffee and tea grounds were completely crushed by Erin’s now impressive tonnage.

“ERIN!!” Jed screamed as her black buffalo shoes passed over him. The coffee and tea grounds rained down around Jed. He dove to the floor covering his head as the ground quivered like a baby’s lower lip. Jed cried out in pain as several off the coffee grounds beat down on him. He started to cough up blood as the boulder sized coffee grounds continue to rain down upon him.

The world around him settled a bit allowing Jed to look up. His eyes traced the body of Erin as far as he could see. Jed gulped as her bright white socks hugged her ankles; which look to be a good thousand feet up. Jed couldn’t even see past her knees.

“Thank you, Come again mam” said Erin. Her voice rumbled across the floor. Jed found himself unable to even make out what she was saying. All he could hear was the garbled gibberish which made up the words.

“Jed! Where are you” said Erin as Jed covered his ears wishing that he could somehow make out what she was saying. Jed bit down on his tongue and managed a few choice words at his inability to understand what Erin was saying.

Jed watched in fear as her foot rose up off the ground and stomped down in the same place.  Erin than started in motion carelessly walking through the spilled coffee and tea, Jed shouted Erin’s name once again even though he knew it was fruitless.

What am I going to do Jed thought to himself as he wiped the blood from his face and started to stand up.  His nerves begin to settle in as he looked around at this new giant world. What am I going to do? How am I going to survive? Where am I going to live? Thousands of similar thoughts rush through his mind.

A flash of movement caught the corner of his eye. Jed darted his head in that direction as a wall of what looked like pasta noodles attached to wooden block appeared. Jed stared at it confused for a second and then the word broom screamed through his mind. Jed looked around at his surroundings and saw nothing but the massive coffee and tea grounds. Jed needed to get out of here he thought to himself.

The broom soared over head and crashed down into the floor sending him to the ground. Jed attempted to stand back up but the bristles of the broom quickly over took him. They sent him skidding along the dirt ridden the floor until Jed ended up in a pile of coffee grounds. He coughed a few times and spit up trying to get the coffee taste out of his mouth.

Jed watched in fear as the broom circled around at dizzying speeds.  Jed could hardly comprehend which way the broom was coming from. Everything was moving in a blur as coffee and tea was sent hurdling into him from every direction. By the time Jed turned his head around in the direction that the tea and coffee grounds were hitting him in, more were coming at him from other side. Jed finally ducked down pushing his head into his lap as the onslaught continued for what seems like hours.

The horrendous beating finally stopped. Jed dug his way out of the large pile of coffee and tea. As his head poked above the pile the looming figure of Erin stood over head, her entire hulking frame begun to lower, her knees hung over him like an awning as a slanted metal wall crashed down on his left. Jed recognized the object as dust pan but it was miles upon miles in width alone. Jed glance to his right as Erin sent a small brush sweeping towards him.

“No!” Jed screamed as he put his hands up futilely. The brush sent him sliding along with the skyscraper sized coffee and tea grounds flying into the dust pan. A hard thud coursed through his body as his head impacted the metal dust pan dizzying him as Jed felt the blood drip from down over his eyes. Jed reached for his hand wiping it across his forehead. He looked at his hand shocked to see his own blood. He drifted into unconsciousness before Erin sent another heap of coffee grounds over him.

Chapter Two

Jed’s eyes struggled to flicker open as what sounded like a rock concert going on in his head. His body was physically and mentally exhausted as he felt a gust of wind whirl by.

“What am I lying in” Jed thought to himself. Slowly he turned his head as part of him wondered if he really wanted to know. Jed’s eyes finally focused fully on the world around him. A brownish sludge was all around him, a sludge made up of coffee grounds and water.

“Gross” Jed belts out as he bolted up only to slip back into the sludge once again. The ground started to quake slightly as Jed watched Erin stomp past the garbage can disappearing into the distance.

“Even in here I can feel the power of her footsteps. How in the world am I going to get her attention? How small am I compared to her? Do I even exist to her?” Jed thought to himself as crawled to the edge of the cliff he was on.

Jed yelled Erin’s name several times before he once again gave up and looked down at the deep trench which separated him from the plastic rim of the garbage can. That’s a long ways down. He thought to himself as he contemplated what to do next.

Jed’s thoughts however were all too quickly erased as a shadow appeared over head. The shadow stretched out in all directions encompassing the world as far as could be seen.

“Erin, Erin NO!! I’m right here.” He screamed as she reached down towards the garbage can. Jed cringed as she grabbed the sides of the garbage can and began to pull the bag away from the rim.  The entire “world” as Jed knew it begun to shift and slide from left to the right. The sludge was splashing up against him as white walls rose up into the sky.  The blue eyes of Erin obliviously were staring right at Jed.

“This can’t be happening” Jed muttered to no one in particular as he darted his head from left to the right trying to find some way not to be taken out with the trash.

“Hey Erin, I thought you were suppose to be training in some new guy.” shouted a new voice. Jed looked around quickly as Erin released her hold on the bag allowing it to slide back into the garbage can.  Luck however, was on Jed’s side as the shifting left a bridge across the trench. A lone stir stick lied precariously between the deep cavern and the rim of the garbage. Jed gulped as he made his way towards the stir stick.

As Jed neared the stir stick he got a glimpse of a tall brunette. She had her hair pulled up in a pony tail while dawning the same khaki pants and white polo that Erin wore. Awestruck he watched her reach seemingly hundreds of miles above him grabbing an apron off of a wooden peg pounded into the wall. She looked simply monstrous; however Jed quickly noticed that this new giant wasn’t nearly as tall as Erin was.

Time was quickly dissipating and Jed knew it. He shakily reached his arm out to grasp the plastic stir stick. He then pulled his body onto the stir stick. As Jed started crawling across he began to feel a bit depressed that he was small enough that he could easily crawl on a stir stick, then, that something like this could support his weight.

Jed continued crawling across the plastic stir stick, slowly placing one hand in front of the other. As he slid his left leg forward he began to lose balance, quickly he grasped the plastic stick with his left hand. Jed yelled in panic as his body slipped from the plastic stick. He grasped the plastic stir stick with his left hand as his body now dangled from the stir stick. Sweat beads begun to form at Jed’s brow as he looked down into the darkness.

“That trench has to be a few thousand miles deep” Jed said to himself as he begun to swing his body from back to front trying to get his leg to catch onto the plastic stir stick.

“Watch counter Stace, I want to take out this garbage” Jed fought his urge to cover his ears as he knew it would mean a plummet to his death most likely. He stared up as an all too familiar shadow appeared overhead. Jed gulped as he now frantically tried to swing his legs up onto the stir stick. His eyes however were focused on Erin as she reached down towards the garbage can. Jed’s right foot finally caught the edge of the stir stick allowing him to pull himself up.

“ERIN!!” Jed futilely yelled as she grabbed at the edge of the garbage bag. Jed began to make his way speedily across the stir stick. Left then right left then right he continued to shimmy across the stir stick but Erin was much too quick. The tall white walls begun to rise well above Jed as the stir stick bridge began to teeter up and down a few times.

“NOOOO!” Jed screamed as the stir stick along with him began to plummet into the deep dark recesses of the trench.  Quickly he reached out towards the sides with his right hand while keeping his left arm firmly attached to the stir stick hoping to latch onto anything.

The descent finally stopped. Jed looked up at the opening to the bag which now seemed so far away. It had to be miles he thought to himself as he looked up at the opening. He could still faintly make out Erin but she seemed to be in another world. The light was gradually cut off as Erin tied the bag shut sealing Jed in the rank darkness.

Chapter Three

The world around Jed grew cold as he remained trapped in the white trash bag in the back storeroom of the coffee shop. He struggled against the white walls of the trash bag but they were much too thick for him to break through. The afternoon drifted into evening as Jed could only helplessly climb the mountainous piles of garbage trying to reach the top of the bag.

The temperature was dropping quickly as the storeroom wasn’t heated and a thick metal door kept the storeroom separate from the rest of the store. As Jed continued to climb his limbs began to grow tired and weak.  He dug his fingers into a well past ripe banana peel. His fingers dug into the peeling as he pulled himself onto the inner shell of the peel. Jed lay sprawled out across the peel breathing heavily. He looked down at the peel and dug his fingers in the soft spoiled gooey left over banana. His stomach churned in disgust as he brought the substance to his mouth. His tongue began to gag before he even put the banana in his mouth. After chocking down several mouthfuls Jed began to sit up looking at the spoiled peel in the dim light.

“So this is what my life has become” Jed mumbled to himself as he stood up and started to climb for a couple of seconds before jumped back down realizing something. He spun around a few times trying to find the source of the dim light, as light had to come from somewhere.  Then he spotted it overhead, a small insignificant hole that the average person wouldn’t see but to Jed it was the size of a window.

“I’m saved” Jed happily screamed as he made his way towards the opening with a cheerful bounce in his step. As Jed reached the opening he could feel renewed energy flowing through him. As Jed pulled himself out of the bag he began to slide down the length of the garbage bag. Everything whirled by him at dizzying speeds as he darted his head from left to right, then all the fun stopped as Jed exploded against the concrete floor knocking him unconscious.

As Jed lied unconscious his body begun to shiver as the cold concrete floor stole away any body heat that he could muster. The temperature continued to fall as the time passed. The heavy metal door begun to open, a blast of warm air entered the room for a moment but is quickly engulfed by the cold air.

Erin and Stacey turned the lights on as they entered the cold storeroom. Jed continued to lie motionless on the floor. The dark black Doc Martins and the Buffalo shoes of Erin and Stacey both stomped about the store room as they grabbed the garbage bags one by one and tossing them into the dumpster outside.

Jed started to awaken, his eyes struggled to open. The first thing he saw was a plume of smoke above him as his body feverishly shivered. The smoke quickly dissipated above him, then reappeared. It took Jed a bit to realize the smoke was his breath, as the smoke continued to rise up Jed begun to see black daggers pushing their way through the smoke.  Jed frantically pushed his body up forcing is his aching joints to bare his weight. The black daggers came down to quickly on poor Jed. He dove to the ground covering his head with his hands expecting nothing less than death.

Memories from long ago didn’t stream through his mind, the thoughts of his family and friends weren’t speeding through. No thoughts of good and bad times. As Jed came face to face with death all he could see was regret.

The daggers beat down against the ground covering him like a blanket on a cold winter’s day. The ground trembled about like bowl of Jell-O. Shaking roughly, devastatingly but not losing form. As Jed tried to stand up he found something hard against his back; the pressure increasing greater and greater by the moment, the black daggers pressing at him from either side. As the black daggers press against him almost putting Jed into a bare hug. He began to gag while his head flailed banging roughly against the hard rocklike surroundings while his body fought for air. Jed recklessly tried to move his arms enough to wiggle or press the daggers away.  Jed faintly cried out help me as the utter blackness consumed him.

Chapter Four

The blackness enveloped everything around Jed. He struggled and fought to get out but being unable to see anything made it difficult. Jed began to slip while his left arm felt trapped.

Light started to shine in from the floor. Jed was a bit shocked as he had never seen anything like it before. Light always came from above so it was a bit surprising to see it come from below. The shock and awe of everything quickly dissipated, Jed found himself stuck in between the tread of one of these girls’ giant shoes. Unfortunately he wasn’t stuck very well. His body began to slip but his arm remained firmly trapped in a wad of pink chewing gum.

“Why is this happening to me” Jed thought to himself as he continued to tug at his arm trying to free it from the gooey gum. The more Jed seemed to pull at it the more stuck it become. The situation became blatantly apparent that Jed would have to find a way to secure himself on this shoe or he would lose his arm. Jed dug his feet into one of the rubber platforms below while grabbing onto another of the rubber platforms with his right arm.  The light that he had been blessed with momentarily was starting to damper as the foot came closer and closer to the cement. Jed fearfully braced himself as best he could.

The foot mashed into the ground shaking Jed violently forcing his body deeper into the groove of the shoe. His back was now firmly pressed against the rubber sole of the shoe. The grooves of the shoe seemed to extend out a few hundred feet in length.

Blood trickled slightly from Jed’s head as his head had roughly pounded against the rubber tread. The monstrous voices of the girls still came down as Jed struggled for his life.

Jed barely managed to keep his body from being banged around during the mighty footfalls of the giant. Each step she took was a life and death battle for Jed. His struggles were nearly meaningless as they only led to his arm being stuck deeper and deeper into the wad of gum. Jed knew that if he gave up, if he wavered for a moment he could lose his hold on her shoe. He knew that with his arm stuck if he didn’t keep his body flat against the rubber sole of her shoe, this giant would unknowingly amputate his arm.

For the first time since the ordeal began Jed had no time to feel pity or sorrow for himself as he was now in a battle. The monstrous voices from above still caused pain to the ears of Jed. He wished that he had an extra set of hands so that he could cover his ears. Now he had not only the voices, but the constant pounding of her shoes to deal with. Panic and Fear coursed through Jed’s body as he tried to think of someway to get out of this, to change the situation but as he heard the door chimes sound he knew that this was it.

The constant brutal pounding continued as Jed struggled to maintain his hold on the rubber walls. Each step slammed Jed’s head against the wall. Jed’s felt something give way and he began to fall as he drifted off into blackness.

Jed’s life was never the same after that moment. Everything he knew, everything he held dear changed on that day, in that one moment. As he left the Coffee shop the first chapter of his life was over. A new chapter was about to start.

The End…
