It is putting in the readers face just how far our society is from consent culture. That may have all sounded critical, and perhaps it was, but through the beautiful depiction of characters and relationships, we learn just how necessary consent is, from the perspective of one who is denied their rights and one who had believed in consent, but broke that trust.
