Title: Chapter 4: Chapter 4
Extremely impressive short story. Many thoughts, let’s get into it.
I am impressed with the detailed surgery performed in chapter 3, and it looks like either you did extensive research or have that kind of knowledge already. And enough knowledge to creatively use it with the size difference just adds to this. I love it, and it’s definitely the highlight here.
The theme here is also fantastic and quite similar to Magna Gratia, but different questions are brought up here. Is it ever wrong to deny help to someone who does evil things? Is someone an evil person based on what they do and is there redemption in that? Having it revealed that the Gulli owns a Lilli really adds a whole new layer to the fear our protagonist has. Typically you would say that you should help anyone, that is the good thing to do, but she treats his kind as property. Does that make her less worthy of care and having her life spared? So much to discuss there, and I love how that is tapped into. Would love to have that explored either in a sequel to this or have that included in Magna Gratia.
Overall, fantastic and would love to see more short stories that delve into concepts Magna Gratia won’t or can’t.
Author's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, this story hasn't gotten much attention as I'd hoped. I'll share my thoughts as well.
I'm no surgeon but I did my research and consulted with some med student friends of mine. I didn't want to overload the story with medical terms, but I couldn't just ignore them either. I think the balance was good in terms of readability. Operating on a giant patient was an idea I hadn't seen done before, so I gave it a shot. The task would've been difficult given the proper tools, not that he had them. Having him improvise and race against time was all part of making the situation dire. I wanted the reader to feel his stress.
The theme of my stories tend to be pretty similar, since they take place in the same world. MG takes place in New Brobdingnag (annexed Lilliput), whereas TRC happens in Gulliveria (where many Lillis live). Unlike MG, this was much darker. The protagonist is cynical for a reason, but when the time came, he had to make a choice. There was no guarantee that he could save her, but he was willing to try anyway. Sometimes life puts you in a difficult position. In this case, he had nothing to gain and (potentially) a lot to lose. I made it a point never to say whether what he did was right or wrong. I believe that should be decided by the reader. The story title isn't a statement--it's a question:
"[What is] The Right Choice[?]"
Considering it was a one-off, I have no plans to continue it. However, similar ideas may be explored in MG, if not other short stories. MG is very lighthearted, but I'm not one to shy away from darker topics. I draw the line at graphic violence, gore, and descriptions of death, but everything else is fair game. I already have a short story in the works that focuses on war and peace. I hope you'll read it when I finally write it.
