This was nothing like an apology from Sharon, but neither was this most recent bout of menacing up to her usual calculating standards. I can't escape the conclusion that Sharon didn't expect Mandy to try to kill Peter, and her own complicity (and lack of foresight) in Mandy's assault bothers Sharon on a level she can't quite access. She can't own up to it, of course, to Peter or to anyone else. I can't remember if Amy or Kimmy are also in Peter's English class, but Sharon seems to have dismissed her coterie while she collects herself. Insisting on her superiority, she reflexively contrasts her care of Peter both with Mandy's callousness and Lisa's negligence, with no other apparent goal than to reassure herself. Feeling on the defensive, she ends the encounter with a derisive barb at the most visible instance of Peter's popularity.

I've lost sight of Sharon's preferred endgame, and perhaps she's shaky on it now, too.

Author's Response:

Thanks for reviewing! Neither Amy nor Kimmy are in English with them, so it's just Peter and Sharon alone there. I won't spoil what's coming, but I will say that you're onto something about Sharon being thrown off her normal center of absolute control

Aggression and territoriality are linked with testosterone, a hormone produced by both boys and girls.

I still don't know what Sharon's endgame is, other than a demonstration of dominance.

Author's Response:

Odds are, nobody's really going to know Sharon's endgame until she wants them to  ;)

C'mon, Sharon, you're smarter than to conspicuously keep your seat while everyone else is standing and applauding.  You can still eye-fuck Peter while politely clapping.  Better not to attend at all and establish a solid alibi elsewhere.  Mandy's already been questioned by the authorities, and you can't be sure she didn't name you as a provocateur.

Author's Response:

Hehe. Sharon's fearlessness can easily be compared to recklessness. As nice as it would be to have an alibi, there's always the chance Peter wouldn't have been captured if Sharon wasn't present on this night.

Very nice handheld molestation scene.  Blind fumbling followed by bare-bulb examination.  In fact, a little pocket frottage is exactly the sort of thing that high schoolers should getting into.  I'll bet Lisa would love it, holding Peter in her pocket and trying to guess what he's doing (presuming Peter isn't too traumatized by this experience).

Not Sharon's cup of tea, however; she'll want to shine those silver spotlights on Peter and drink up every bit of his terror.

Author's Response:

Odds are, Peter's had a fantasy or two about what you're describing with Lisa by now. And that's a very correct distinction between how Mandy and Sharon handle themselves.

I haven't been this frightened of a basement since Buffalo Bill's. While Peter's been doing a fair job keeping Mandy in a non-punitive mood, there's still a lot of accidental peril. I doubt that basement is arthropod-free.

Author's Response:

It rubs the giant spiders on its skin or else it gets the hose again

Wow, if Sharon set this up to position herself as rescuer, it's a high-risk strategy. Mandy might seriously injure or kill Peter before he's "rescued," and Mandy could also say something that would implicate Sharon.

A lot turns on Sharon's ultimate motives. I can't think she simply wants Peter harmed; I think she wants him dependent. On her.

Or she just likes the sensation of having a five-inch-tall person in her hand (and elsewhere?).

Author's Response:

As usual, I'll vaguely say you're right about some things here and some not. But it's absolutely valid to think that Mandy is the kind of wild-card who couldn't really be entrusted with a vital part of a plan.

My favorite thing about petplay is the intrinsic humiliation.  Even Lisa would have to stifle a giggle at the sight of Peter in a hamster ball.  I doubt Mandy is deliberately trying to humiliate Peter, but indifference to others' dignity is only one of her many social failings.  Good thing she's not interested in setting up a YouTube channel.

Author's Response:

This is a concept I enjoy too, so it seemed like the fitting place to use it here. You're right that not every thing Mandy does is pure tactical humiliation; she works a lot on impulse.

So Mandy's clever enough to set up tests to see if Peter is trustworthy, but she's surprised when Peter turns out to be as fragile as Sparky. What a messed-up kid.

The wrenching thing here is that Peter's best option is probably to play up his helplessness, perhaps even exaggerate his injuries.  I just hope his internal-Erica monologue won't prevent him from seizing the only way to manipulate Mandy.  Even if it works, he'll feel like a deceiver.  (Bonus self-doubt: he'll worry that no matter what he achieves later, he'll always be tempted to fall back into "wounded bird" mode.)

Author's Response:

Mandy's all about unwinnable scenarios that she may not even acknowledge as unwinnable herself.

He's gonna hafta apologize and ask to see the movie with her.  And he has to mean it.

At this point, good acting may or may not even make a difference

I'm less confident than before about my ability to predict where this is going, but the humiliation in this chapter is so exquisite (and potentially public) that I cannot help but suspect that Mandy got some coaching.

Sharon share alike....

(Love this chapter. That photo is going to haunt Peter for decades, no matter how this turns out.)

Author's Response: Glad to hear I can still surprise with this one. It does seem like Mandy’s had some advice at some point.

Mandy frowned, processing the sudden re-emergence of Peter’s hardiness.  Had to read that one twice.

Excellent rising tension.  Peter's been through so many perils and survived, it's difficult to keep the menace immediate, but Mandy's "nobody's little bitch" zeal is genuinely terrifying.  Stabbing the airholes with Peter in the jar is an image that will stay with me for a long time.  It's gonna be fun in the morning when Mandy discovers she forgot to let him use the outhouse before bed.

Author's Response:

I can see there being a double misreading on that one.

This is definitely meant to be a high point for the stakes in Peter's life. And he's definitely going to need to use the bathroom.

A tough concept to swallow.  Don't go there, Peter.

This has been worth the wait.  I hope Mandy wasn't bluffing about making movies.

Author's Response:

I hoped someone would groan at that. And she most definitely is not bluffing.

Excellent sensory details.  I hope she remembered to record it with her phone.

I'm glad Peter is developing more internal resources for surviving such experiences, because he'll never be able to escape them entirely.

Author's Response:

Anything's possible with Mandy.

And yes, at this stage of his risky life, Peter's picked up a few skills

I didn't dare exhale until they were all back inside the walls. Typically, when a character has a plan-altering idea like the Jack's while the plan is already under way, there's a cost associated with not having voiced the idea from the start.  In this case, it would have been Julia returning to her room ahead of schedule and spotting them before they could reach safety.

In this genre, "waiting for the other shoe to drop" takes on a whole new meaning.

Author's Response:

I appreciate your thought about the flow of the narrative with regard to characters changing plans - I was hoping to unnecessarily worry some people with that expectation, though wasn't sure how much it came across. Sometimes making you think the monster is coming is worse than making the monster come. Of course, this story still has a fairly full climax to come, and there's plenty of room left for multiple shoes to drop.

I'm not sure if I was aware of Giantess World back in 2011, but the curious fact is that even if I had been aware of the site back then, I probably would have taken one look at the tags and/or synopsis for Julia and given it a pass.  At that time, I had a much narrower appreciation of size-fantasy, and I had already seen plenty of underdeveloped psychotic giantesses tormenting tinies without care or nuance.  If any of my fantasies had featured "evil" giantesses, I typically wanted a "gentle" giantess to intervene (and triumph).

Since then, however, I have reflected deeply on where my desires might come from and allowed all sorts of ideas to surface.  I have also been exposed to talented creators in the size-fantasy community (I still marvel at how far we've come and how many interesting people have popped up), and this has really broadened my tastes.

I think I first took a good look at Julia sometime in 2014, after I first tried my own hand at writing size-fantasy stories and was looking around for other examples of thoughtful writing. The story came highly recommended, and I went back to the beginning and was immediately drawn in. The connection between horror and eros is well-understood, but it was oh so gratifying to see it applied to size-fantasy.  Being held in the hand of a giantess can be viscerally arousing, and it can be sickeningly terrifying.  In Julia, you showed how it could be both at the same time.

Thank you for picking this back up and seeing it through, although as someone who has spent months thinking about his own characters, I imagine you could hardly abandon Jack and Julia after investing years in them.

Your writing is a spectacular example of how complex-yet-consistent characters, tight plotting, smart dialogue, and evocative-yet-subtle imagery can ring the cherries even if one's favorite fetish tags aren't represented (although if you want to throw an insertion scene into The Freshman, I won't complain).

Author's Response:

Aw, shucks. Thanks so much for your thoughts on this. I'm glad to hear it had that kind of effect. I've had a lot of fun putting Julia in the special macro-themed gray area between sexy and scary. I'm not sure Peter would be particularly appreciative of having "insertion" tagged onto his story, though...

I'm going on vacation (away from the interwebz), so it looks like I'll have to wait until I get back for the epilogue.  That's alright; Jack's waited two and half years (Was Chapter 1 really written in Nov 2011, or earlier?).

Well, you got me.  I didn't expect Jack to survive with all of his appendages undigested, and I certainly didn't expect him to end up with a full-size guardian in Gina.  The macrophile fanboy in me (or, rather, in my pants) would prefer he not find a way to regain his normal size, but the realistic tone you've struck with this story argues that none of the survivors would want to remain tiny.

Good old Art.  Pace Jack, looks like someone knew Miss Mack pretty well, too.

Faith's "Baby's First Memories" book is going to come with a Content Warning.  When she turns 16, will she ask her parents for a car or a PMRD?

Well done!  A catharsis worthy of Euripides or Tarantino.

Author's Response:

Chapter 1 was actually written in January or February of 2011. So this has been a looong time coming.

Glad I was able to surprise you! It's probably more likely Faith would ask for a car, though, considering how she was portrayed in The Shrink Act Files.

Thanks so much for reading/reviewing.

"I can't believe I missed out. Was that just a one-time offer?" Yah, they had too much fun with the taunting part of the plan. And a smart Cyclops Julia would have turned around after the clothesline.  Just goes to show that at this point no one's at the top of their game.

I hope the finale's appropriately gory. You can't raise the stakes and then leave us hanging. I think that principle is called Chekhov's Guppy.

Author's Response:

Well, they gotta try to have a little fun, considering they might all die if this doesn't go well. Things have gone wild enough that no one, Julia included, is thinking straight anymore.

I won't spoil what's to come, but there will indeed be some grittiness.

Jack's absolutely right.  Whatever else happens now, Julia's ancien régime is over, and they all should take pride in that.  Hearing her wail in despair was as sweet a reward as he could hope for.

So, she's done shrinking at 12 inches? Once she figures out she can't immediately reach Jack, her rage will turn to panic.

I'm partially relieved that I came up with a darker plot twist than what you actually went with. Gina's always had an irrational faith in Jack, but she's as capable of self-sacrifice as any of them at this point. I never thought Julia would harm the baby, but Gina might not have seen that, and she could easily have decided to remove Julia's leverage by killing the baby and herself, given an opportunity (she could quickly smother the baby and then provoke Julia to kill her).

Author's Response:

Yes, she's done shrinking at (roughly) 12 inches - really that's just an estimate on Jack's part, since it's only because the ray couldn't take its full effect before Julia threw it away.

That definitely would've been a dark twist! Perhaps it could've crossed Gina's mind as she spent all of this alone time while her friends were gone in the walls, though at this point she's seen too many innocents die to want to be responsible for one herself.

This is an excellent example of your talent for portraying conversation with depth and nuance.  I really appreciate it when dialogue is leavened with body language and internal asides, and you always deliver.  The entire story hinges on this encounter, and reading it made my guts as icy as Jack's.

That said, I don't think Julia's the only one engaging in desparate wish-fulfillment here.

Author's Response:

Thanks, it means a lot. This conversation is definitely pivotal to the entire relationship of Jack and Julia. But you're right that Jack has his hopes up just as much as Julia.

As bad as our three fugitives have it, at least they (unlike me) aren't wearing shorts that just got soiled.

This is probably the one and only optimistic outlook they could be having.
